Changes To Our Emojis?

Did the emojis change, or is it because I got a new phone? Was on an iPhone 6 on iOS 11, now on an iPhone XR on iOS 12. The menu I could open in the upper right that showed me rows of them to pick from is gone. I seem to have the full iPhone emoji range instead now. ? ?

@intparent, can you please send me a screenshot with the emoji as you see them? The email address is admin@collegeconfidential.com. Thanks!

@CCadmin_Sorin

There used to be a little smiley face in the upper right corner of the dialogue screen when writing posts. When we hit that…all the emojis appeared…and frankly sometimes covered the dialogue box where we were typing.

I’m using an IPad Air. The little smiley face is not in this dialogue box anymore. So…where does one now access the CC emojis?

I will say, I like having apparently full access to the phone emojis. But I did like some of our special CC ones, too.

I have the emojis on my keyboard…on my iPad. Just no CC emojis.

???‍???

I noticed this change also. But if you put) : () :)… A list of some emojies show up. Not just the CC ones.

@Knowsstuff when I put a :, I get a list of five smiley faces. That’s it. Not that it matters, because I do have my emojis.

But where did that smiley face go @CCadmin_Sorin not that I miss it!

@thunder1. Yes that is what I am talking about. Have no idea where the rest of the emojis went to. I thought my account was locked out of it or something. I assume there was an update and it got taken out or something?

It did sometimes cover the text — when I needed to fix something in that corner of the text, sometimes it would pop up the emoji display when I didn’t mean to. And the palette of emojis to pick from was so tiny on my phone, I’d have to turn the phone sideways to really see them and poke the right one when I did want one.

I did like they moved. And now our old posts have some emoji text that doesn’t render. I’d guess we might have problems rendering the new ones sometimes — my kids had older phones for a while, and newer emojis didn’t display for them. Could happen with users out here, too.

The emoji menu is gone on my installation of Chrome on my Macbook, as well. I’ll miss the animated emoji, but if we have access to the full complement of Unicode ones, that’s actually better, I think.

Or maybe this is a temporary thing—I’ve had issues with BBCode tags here the past week or so, where sometimes the tags give me, say, the bold formatting I want, and other times it doesn’t parse them and I have to go in and edit to remove the tags.

So something’s clearly in flux.

But to test whether we really have all the emoji, a dinosaur, because you’ve got to pick something: ?

ETA: It worked! But typing @ and then getting a dropdown list of user handles still doesn’t.?

I’m getting the drop down list with @ on my iPhone XR — maybe it is browser specific?

I no longer have the emoji icons. I use Edge desktop.

Emojis have been gone for several days on all products (apple phone, ipad, desktop, laptop chrome or edge)

I don’t have emojis on my laptop either but I can use the apple ones on my phone, I just don’t like to post from my phone. I do have the @ username working though.

Guys, on mobile you can use the emoji palette from your device. Not sure if this was a recent change though.

I never could use the phone emoji pallette on the iPhone 6. Now can on the XR (which I just got about 2 weeks ago).

Okay, just switched to my laptop (Windows based) to update this post. There are no emojis in the corner of the box anymore. The CC emojis are completely gone from all my platforms in the upper right corner.

What I do see is a very short list of options if I type a “:” on the laptop. There are 5 choices of emojis (vs the dozens we had before). If I follow the “:” with something I know used to give me an emoji in the old CC palette (say, : followed by D), I see 5 different emoji options - but none of them are the “big grin” you’d expect from “:” followed by “D”.

I think (1) the emjois changed recently, and (2) they are kind of broken now. At least on the laptop. It might have been unintentional, @CCadmin_Sorin. But it is not the same.

Before this change, if I inserted a “real” (i.e., Unicode) emoji in my replies, it’d cut everything off from that point. I like the new system, on balance.

Also, somehow, sometime in the last couple days I started getting the dropdown list when I @'ed someone. No idea why it wasn’t working for me for a while, but it’s resolved itself, and I’m happy about that.

The emoji list that used to appear in the upper right hand box is gone for me now, on a MacBook.

However, FYI on a Mac you can press Control/Command/Spacebar and you have access to emojis.

??

@CCadmin_Sorin I have always been able to use the emojis on my IPad keyboard when typing here…like this???

But there used to be a little smiley face in the upper right corner of the reply dialogue box that has been missing since this thread started. It’s just not there anymore. That was where the CC emojis were.

This is fine…but was this a purposeful change…or some goof up? That smiley face (which when tapped on brought up all the CC emojis) is gone. Gone.

Frankly, it was a PITA because when you tapped on it, the emoji pop up took up a large portion of the dialogue screen. It was also easy to tap by mistake when typing the end of a line.

So…is the CC emoji function permanently gone? I think this is what we are asking. Or is this something that the tech crew will be reviewing?

@thumper1, the smiley face was not a purposeful, permanent change. The tech team enabled that briefly while investigating what’s causing the tagging issue. Now that that problem was fixed, we have restored normal functionality to the site.
