here is my story:
i decided that it might be a good idea to indicate on my common app. (i only applied to one school ED, and was accepted. if it in some way helps, the school is a lac, in nescac to be specific) that i wanted to be an EN or bio major. the problem with this is i am REALLY having second thoughts because i started reading books about econ, and joined a local libertarian organization. essentially, i am getting interested in econ/business and polysci.

how hard will it be to tell my college, 'no, i changed my mind about what i want to do at your school' this fall?

I'm sure it's fine... I'm sure the vast majority of schools don't bind you to your major, and your indication on the Common Application is just for survey reasons. Colleges understand that the interests of students are likely to change, and they are often very accommodating, as long as the major is not in a more selective program of the school. Besides, for the first one or two years, you take general courses unrelated to your major anyway...
