I was admitted under the economics major but recently had a change of heart and wish to pursue mechanical engineering. In the NEU portal, under change of major request, it says please provide any additional comments. Do you think I need to? How hard do you think it will be to change my major. Also, what happens if they decline my change of major request?

I’d actually like to know how hard this process is as well. I was accepted as a math major, but I want to change to undecided

I can’t really give you an answer, but I know changing into Engineering might be difficult. Changing within Arts & Sciences shouldn’t be too bad, but I’m not sure about undeclaring. Why do you want to be undecalred moir3241?

If they decline my request to change majors, will I also be rejected from the university?

^I do not believe so, if you were already admitted.

You won’t be rejected from the university, they’ll just have you stay in your original major if they decline your switch, and you can probably switch once you’re in the school.

It’s always harder to switch into a different school than it is to switch majors. It’s pretty easy to switch majors within the school (ie economics to math or biology).

Call the school and ask them what to do… they’ll know better than we do.

I don’t want to be a math major anymore because I’ve realized it’s not going to get me anywhere. So since I don’t have another major in mind, I just want to go in as undeclared and figure everything out once I start classes. (if that makes sense)

or switch into psychology? I’m really unsure of what I want to major in…I kinda just picked math because it was my favorite subject at the time

You could switch into undeclared, but if they don’t let you, it’s not a big deal.

Your major really isn’t set in stone as a freshman (or even a sophomore). You’ll be placed into a course for your major, but otherwise you can take whatever you think might interest you. I did that first semester… I was a sociology major, but after taking psychology and a semester of biology, I switched to neuroscience.

Worst case scenario is you take a math class that you won’t need for graduation. But you have 128 credits to fill (16 of which you’ll fill first semester), so it’s not like after a semester you’re already set into a specific track.

In your acceptance e-mail, you should have been provided information on how to log in to the student portal. Create your account and once you have logged in, there will be an option under your account to change your major. Changes in major are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. It probably will be more difficult to change majors within different schools, but you might as well try.

I started as Chemistry because I did well in it in high school. Spent a semester there, decided to switch into business. Got half way through the paperwork when I realized I liked economics. Spent a semester there. Then northeastern created an economics and mathematics dual major this year, so I switched into that. So far I’ve made it three months.

neuchime, how popular is the economics major at northeastern?

thanks everyone for your help! I think I’m gonna try the switching majors on my NEU account and see what happens

Economics is pretty popular, I guess… They were amazed at the number of econ majors in the past two years, because I guess it’s been much higher than normal, but that’s to be expected. The economy in the toilet means more econ majors.

When i was at orientation(the last one) there was about 50 of us, (not including the couple that were dualing). Alper was pretty surprised by the amount of people interested in the major.

I recently requested to switch my major to architecture. Does anyone know how long it will take for them to send a decision? and there was no confirmation email or anything…maybe theyre closed for winter break…?

i sent mine too… i guess we will find out

they’re closed for winter break

jeffsun…did you leave additional comments?

i did not… did you?
