changing high schools 3rd quarter junior year??

Hi all,

My son is a junior at a very competitive boarding school about 4.5 hours from home. He is doing okay, not great (GPA is about 3.6, but he got a perfect ACT score and does very well on other standardized tests). He is pretty unhappy at school right now and has continually expressed interest about returning to his old school, a smaller private school about 10 minutes from home. He also doesn't think that he would get a good recommendation from a humanities teacher (or at least not stellar recs...). I'm concerned about activities, etc. that he would lose if he left and especially how to explain the change to colleges.

He is looking at schools like Macalester,Vassar, Bates... not ivy-level but nice places.

I'd like him to make his own decision but I'd like some insight from any parents or students.

Does anyone on CC have any ideas about what to do? I can provide more information if needed.

You need to find a way to get to the root of his unhappiness with his current school. There may be something going on there that he is not telling you. Trust your mom instinct on this one. You will know what is the right thing to do.
