Changing Major

I was accepted to UNC EA. If I want to change to another major, how easy is the process? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It’s very easy. At orientation generally you can change it just by writing your new intended major on a piece of paper, and then after that you have to schedule an advising appointment (which could be anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes) to have an adviser change it for you.

The above holds true for majors in the College of Art and Sciences. For majors in the professional schools (for example: business administration, journalism, information science, etc ), it is a bit more complicated, typically involving completion of pre-requisites and a secondary application/admissions process.

i read somewhere that students dont pick their major until the end of their sophomore year? im a bit confused

You aren’t required to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year for the College of Arts and Sciences. You can technically declare anything your first year, but several majors have pre-reqs (NewYawk’s post) and an application process before you can officially major in them and might require declaration or at least completion of specific coursework before the end of your sophomore year.

oh gotcha. i think im accepted to one of these majors that requires an application at the end of sophomore year. i checked on the website of that specific major and it says that only 20 people got accepted to that major/program. does anyone of you know what will happen if one does not get accepted to that major/program?

If not accepted… you need a “plan B” major. For example, someone not accepted into Kenan-Flagler might pursue an Economics major in the College of Arts and Sciences.
