Changing Major

Hello, I am a senior who is planning on attending Texas A&M University next year. In November, I was accepted into the university as a Statistics major. Currently, I am debating whether or not I want to change my major. I was wondering whether or not it is too late to change my major to engineering. Is engineering already full? Any information regarding changing my major to engineering would be appreciated. If I can’t get engineering, I guess I will stay with statistics.

Thanks

Yes. It is too late to change your major to engineering. To be considered for engineering, your applicant file would have to have gone under review and the deadline to apply was Dec. 1.

Students who apply to Texas A&M University must commit to a major at the time of application. If you decide another major is a better match, it’s best to make the change during your second or third semester. Those who change majors later often extend their time to graduation by one or two semesters.

Here is more on that. https://us.tamu.edu/Students/Change-Major

What type of engineering specifically were you interested in?

@TamuEngineer I was thinking about aerospace, electrical, mechanical, or civil.

Ah okay, I tried looking up a degree plan for statistics majors, to see what courses you could take so you wouldn’t be too far behind if you transferred after a semester or two, but I couldn’t find one. What made you want to choose statistics and then want to switch if you don’t mind me asking? The engineering departments that DO take actual statistics courses would be Industrial Engineering, Computer Engineering/Computer Science?, Industrial Distribution. and Civil. I don’t think aerospace, electrical, or mechanical do.

I chose statistics because I enjoy math and statistics is something that seems interesting to me. I enjoy predicting and creating models, but I am questioning whether I see myself sitting at a cubicle all day analyzing data as my career.

@TamuEngineer I will have AP Calc BC, English Lang, Comp Sci, Econ, Gov, Environmental Science, and Statistics credits. I am not sure how much that helps, but I’ll be done with math 151 and math 152 by end of 1st semester. I could also take physics courses that I need as my science electives.

Thanks for the help

If you love math and statistics, I would recommend Industrial Engineering or Civil. Based on the degree plans for both. And unfortunately, as I’ve taken quite a bit of tours to companies that show us what their engineers do, many of them do spend a good amount of time at a desk analyzing data. But of course that can also depend on what direction you want to go with whatever degree you pursue, as many degrees have multiple specializations you can gear towards during your junior and senior year.

As for what you can take to help catch you up with general engineering, as your science electives, I would take CHEM or PHYS 218 for your first year. Opt to switch out of MATH 172: Calculus and sign up for MATH 151: Engineering Math. And as for the CSCE elective you have to take, it would only help you if you were interested in Industrial or Computer Science/Engineering. As you could take CSCE: 206 which would satisfy a requirement for that degree plan. The only thing they might make you do is take STAT 182, since I had a friend that was in a different major and wanted to transfer to engineering later on, and they made him take a course for the major he was originally in.

You can change to any open major, however, engineering is not one of them since they have a review process for admission to major. I would call to verify - my D changed her major after the close of applications, and was accepted into business (after it had ‘closed’), the process involved was different than the usual route. However, she was switched. Always ask for your personal situation if something is possible… it happens!
