Changing majors after freshman year - is it as hard as they make it?

When you ask the admissions counselor on the phone about this topic they make it seem like its rarely done and virtually impossible, doesn't surprise me.

My question is, what do you all know about this topic, whether it was your friends or you that had to transfer schools after freshman year.

Reason why I ask is because I am really interested in this school but I applied to LAC and was put in ACES by the admissions board and would like to transfer out of that.

Thanks in advanced!

I’d like to know how tough it is from others experiences as well. My daughter is in LAS and might want to switch to business. I’ve heard that is extrememly tough. She got accepted ED in LAS and I called to see if she would be able to switch before the 2nd decision and was told her acceptance would be withdrawn and if she didn’t get into the college of business, she would not even be considered for LAS, or anthing else. She would be out of U of I. I mentioned she is a National Merit Finalist. 5.51 w. GPA, 33 act great EC etc. I was told that there were no guarantees and that even with those stats, she would be at risk of not getting in. We probably should have gone through with the switch then, but being told that made her stay in LAS for now.
I went to U of I, and love the school, but it is times like this that are frustrating. The red tape and impersonal nature of a huge institiution are a definite negative. I had a hard time believing what I was being told regarding it would Business or nothing! to get into the college of business as a soph will possibly be even more difficult.

I love Notre Dame’s First Year Studies. Students make decisions after their freshman year as to what they would like to major in. Now if only we could afford to send her there!

It depends on the departments. I think the stats are something like 75% of college students make at least one change of major in their time in school (I can’t remember the exact number but it was very high like that). Transferring from ACES to LAS shouldn’t be too tough for most majors, but LAS to Business is incredibly difficult. Both business and engineering are hard to be admitted to and even harder to transfer into.

Looks like I will probably steer clear of U of I then, I got directly admitted to Kelley so looks like it would be better to take the safe route.

Wait, you applied to business at IU and LAS at UIUC? That seems odd.

But, if your true interest is business, as a UIUC grad, I would definitely choose IU if the option was 100% sure spot in Kelley or a chance at a spot in the Business program at UIUC.

Business is a difficult transfer. Students have one shot at such a transfer once at UIUIC, they can apply in May of freshman year for entry into sophomore year and then decison is made in June after grades come out. Usually only about 50% of those who apply for a transfer into business are accepted.
