Changing Majors After Submitting Apps?

Hi, I recently submitted apps to UC’s for biomedical engineering. My long term goal was medical school, but recently, I decided I’d much rather major in English before applying for med school.
My question is: am I allowed to email each individual UC and request a major change before being considered?

(If you’re wondering why, I was pressured into engineering from my dad despite not being a strong candidate- didn’t take physics, calc BC, not the best math student, etc. & know I’m a much stronger applicant for English. I don’t want this to prevent me from getting into my dream school. I’m very anxious to change now before it’s too late…)

In my personal statement essays, I discussed being a speech contest scholarship recipient and my passion for writing poetry. This might make it more understandable as to why I’m making the switch.

I’d appreciate any feedback, thanks in advance.

You don’t have to declare your major before you apply. The major you put on your app is simply your INTENDED major. You can certainly change it after matriculation.

This is unless the school of engineering is separate from the school of fine arts (or whatever school offers an English major).

yes you need to change your application for the UC’s, because they do admit students by major in the Engineering programs.

Thank you, this answers my question perfectly. Do you know if this might hinder my chances of getting in because it is a big jump from one program to another? In other words, does it make me look too uncertain?

Some UC’s will not let you change majors once you have submitted your application and some will.

For UCLA: https://www.admission.ucla.edu/Applicant/changes.htm

For UCB:
Q: Can I change the major (and/or college/school) I applied for at Berkeley?

A: To change a major/college/school in your submitted Berkeley application, you need to email us with the following information: full name (UC application); UC application number; college/major applied; college/major requested.

NOTE: You must use the same email address as you listed in your submitted UC application. Email your request to: application@berkeley.edu

I would email the rest of the UC’s and see what their procedures are for changing your major prior to decisions. Just remember if you do get accepted into any of the UC’s as a BME, it is much easier to switch into the English major than visa versa.
