changing majors and security deposit

2 questions:

1) is it easy to change majors and/or departments at Gatech? For example, from biochem to chem, or biochem to chem. engineering..?

2) when is the deadline to make the decision on whether or not we want to attend georgia tech (and make the security deposit)?

Yes, very easy. In your first 60 hours, you get 1 “free” change of major from any major to any other major. You simply fill out a 1 page form and submit it to the Registrar (it takes less than 5 minutes).

After you pass 60 hours or once you’ve used your “free” change of major, you have to go to the new major and ask for permission to transfer into their program. They sign a form then you take that form to the Registrar. As long as you have a good GPA (basically, above a 2.5), you shouldn’t have any problems transferring unless you’re severely deficient for that major (for example, a senior trying to transfer into Mechanical Engineering that has not taken Calculus yet). Some majors (like Management) require you to attend an information session about the major first or to meet with an academic adviser first (to make sure you know what you’re getting into).

If you’re interested in changing majors now, you could wait until school starts then request a change. However, that uses your “free” major change. Instead, it’s much smarter to call Admissions/Registrar to see if they’ll change your major before you start (which still allows you that one free change).

Your $250 deposit is due by May 1. If they don’t have your money by then, you lose your spot in the freshman class. You can decide to not attend at any time before the first day of school, but if you’ve already paid your deposit, you lose it. Your housing application for on-campus housing is due the same day.

Thanks banjohitter! that was really helpful
