Hi, im an admitted transfer students who applied as sociology, but i really would like to double major with theater.
I know ill have to talk with my advisor when i get to campus, but can anyone talk to me now about how im gonna have to do that? can i change from weinberg to communication school without having to audition?
I doubt it. Theatre is one of the few majors at NU that are competitive entry.
You need to talk to someone at NU ASAP as the theatre program is ultra competitive with respect to admissions. Same with SESP & the music school & engineering.
Theatre auditions at Northwestern–to the best of my knowledge–are held in the sophomore year for musical theatre only.
Be sure to ask whether or not an option for a minor in acting/theatre is available for Weinberg students.
Here’s the scoop: What year are you going to be - sophomore? Junior? This may impact transferring into Theatre. There is no audition for the major but only 100 students are allowed in the major, so you will need to get on the waiting list to transfer in when someone leaves. In general, a student can transfer in only during freshman or sophomore years so they spend at least two years in the major. (Perhaps they make exceptions for overall NU transfers- I don’t know). My daughter just started as a Theatre major as a sophomore and she is double majoring in Weinberg. The class of ‘21 so far is not seeing many students leave the major and the waitlist for this class was closed in fall quarter; that doesn’t mean that it won’t open up and move later. Pursuing Performance Studies may be a possible idea for you. Best idea is to call there ASAP and see what your options are. BTW, all this info can be found on the Theatre webpages.
@Publisher, once you are in to NU, transferring in to Engineering isn’t tough at all, and I’m quite certain that’s true for SESP as well. For instrument majors in Music, you obviously have to play an instrument well enough, and they have high standards.
@PurpleTitan : Possible yes, but transferring to engineering without the appropriate prior coursework may entail extending one’s stay. For music, that is an a major which requires an audition prior to acceptance & instructor availability for one’s particular instrument.
@Publisher, true, though students in ISP or on a pre-med track (or certain other programs) would have already taken many of the required classes for engineering freshman year. In any case, the transfer process itself was a piece of cake when I was there (you fill out a form) and I believe that is still true.
