Changing Majors When I Transfer?

I started off as a criminal justice major at my 2-year institution, but want to major in philosophy or English when I transfer. The problem is that I may end up getting my degree in criminal justice, and was worried as to whether or not that would lower my chances of getting into a liberal arts school?

I talked to an advisor and she said that they focus more on the courses taken rather than the degree itself, but I haven’t gotten to take any Philosophy courses, they offer like 2 or 3 a semester here and I’ve been focused on my gen. eds. So would that set me back? If so, I’ll probably major in English just because I’ve at least taken 9 credits of English courses here.

Your advisor is absolutely correct. What will matter most when you transfer, is the courses you have taken. Just about the only time your major might matter, would be if there is an articulation agreement between your CC and the 4-year place you are transferring to that guarantees admission into a particular major there provided you have completed a specific program at the CC.

Since you aren’t sure about the criminal justice major, then consider changing your focus now at your CC. That might make room in your schedule for one or two philosophy classes.

Don’t worry about the AA degree. Just get the required courses for your intended major.

You are certain that you want to major in philosophy even though you’ve never taken a philosophy course…? Well, do you, but I could see them maybe denying you for the fact that you haven’t begun any major-prep so they have no idea how successful you’ll actually be in that program

Shellebelle212, I planned on taking an intro philosophy course in the Spring, but might major in English considering I can graduate with 15 credits worth of English courses, and I already know that English is a strength of mine.

Ok, that is probably a more feasible option. Maybe put English as your first then Philosophy as either your alternate major or prospective minor. Good luck!
