changing majors

can you change majors before even starting fall semester? like from comp sci to EE?

Since EE is within the Clark school of Engineering, it is not likely, since Engineering is a limited-enrollment program (LEP). You’ll need to look specifically at Clark school regarding their rules/guidelines for internal transfers…you may need to transfer in later, and you’ll want good grades in your UMD courses to back you up.

Two years ago, during the summer before her freshman year, my daughter was able to switch from math (non-LEP) to business (LEP). She was a very strong candidate, so I’m sure that played into her ability to make the change. However, it would be very much to your advantage if you were able to make the switch to EE now, rather than trying to do it later and risk not being able to. If I were you, I’d contact Clark School (or Admissions?) and see if it’s possible to switch in now - it can’t hurt; the worst they can do is say no. But - unless you have very strong credentials, I imagine they’ll say no. (FYI, when my daughter made the switch, she did it by working through the business school, not Admissions.)

Why would this be a problem? My daughter applied as un-decided major. So you folks are saying she has to go to the department or certain school within UMCP to claim her major. We have not worked out the detail yet, but she would do it during the summer.

JudyLee - It’s only a problem for majors that are designated LEPs (Limited Enrollment Programs). It’s quite common to apply for enrollment directly to business schools or engineering schools at many universities. If you apply to the “liberal arts” part of one of those universities, and later decide you want to move to the engineering school or the business school, you have to apply for an internal transfer. On the other hand, if you want to switch from one major to another within the “arts and sciences school” at one of these universities, it’s usually not a problem. The twist is that at UMD, some of the LEP majors are things like Biology and Psychology. For an explanation of LEPs, follow this link (if it works): [University of Maryland - Limited Enrollment Progams](http://www.lep.umd.edu/)

Also, Judy, there’s nothing that says your D has to declare a major this summer. She can work on her CORE requirements (or are they calling them something new)? She’s likely in the College of Letters and Sciences, who provides advisors at orientation for registration, etc. If she really does not know, she doesn’t have to feel rushed to select.
