Changing Majors

Im currently a junior transfer student declared as a sociology major. I want to switch to social welfare, which I know is impacted. I have all the prereq's completed with a's. I would have declared this major right away, but didn't know about it until now. I want to eventually get an msw, so this major would be perfect. Do you think it's possible? Thanks.

The issue for the department will be whether it is reasonable to complete the degree requirements with courses in Spring this year, both semesters next year, and possibly the two summers. If you can make a reasonable case that you can complete it without having to be on campus in Fall of 2013, there shouldn’t be a problem.

Go look through the department information on the major. In particular, figure out what sequence of courses you could take to complete it, based on what is known about the upcoming classes that will be taught. Many departments list the schedule pattern, either in the course catalog (F, S, Su after the course) or on some pages on their website. using that, put together something that works.

Next, collect everything they ask for in order to declare the major. Go down with it and your plan to the major advising office right away. They will look it all over, assign you an advisor if necessary, the faculty advisor will review your plan, and if you still have a good case, it really helps your chances. At worst they might wait to see how you are doing in your current (first Cal semester) classes, then make a decision by mid-semester. Depends on exactly how oversubscribed they are (applicants versus slots).

Once they approve, it is ultra simply. Take the signed form to the college advising office (e.g. L&S overall advising) and within a few days, you are declared in the new major;.
