I got accepted to UIUC and I declared my major as social work. After much talking with teachers and parents, I decided I want to transfer to business, economics, or engineering. Obviously, these are majors that are more academic and require "more".

Also, I saw that social work isn't really a undergraduate thing? I don't really know anything so that is why I am posting this.

So when do I actually declare my major? I know that students change their majors on average 2-3 times and it sounds easier said than done. Obviously I know I have to work hard to change majors...but for the first year or two...do I not really commit to a major? When can I transfer?..after first year? HELP!!! What do I do first year...as a social work declared??? I WANT TO TRANSFERRRR

Talk to an advisor in Social Work. Explain your desire to transfer. Transfers usually occur after freshman year at the earliest. However, GenEds are GenEds and you’ll be focusing mainly on them freshman year anyway. You’ve been admitted directly into your program, since, I believe the only exception is the College of Business, where you’re admitted to the College and will request your specific major later. You request, however. You don’t declare. You’re always in competition with everyone else who desires an available seat in a particular program, and normally, if you have less than 60 semester hours, they weigh whether you would have been admitted to the program directly as a freshman, and, as such, consider your ACT/SAT test scores as well. Transferring in after Sophomore year, your college academic record is the only academic consideration.

WOW thank you so much! This helped so much. So basically since Im already in social work, later on I will get in as long as I don’t fail. Like the competition is less because I was already directly admitted…right? And if I want to transfer, which I do, I complete GenEds like all the other students for first year, my grades become something to compete with and then I ask to transfer, etc? @Balthezar

You’ve been admitted to social work, where you will be allowed to remain as long as your grades allow. Transfering anywhere else is not guaranteed, and is competitive. Your first year grades will be a factor after your first year, but if you try to transfer to any other program with less than 60 semeter hours of transferable credit, they will still consider the other factors that I mentioned above. As I said, you need to confirm all of this with your advisor. I’ve given you what I think is correct. They’ll be able to tell you exactly how things work.
