I'm an incoming freshmen at UIUC and I'm majoring in Computer Engineering. I am actually hoping to change my major to Computer Science, but UIUC's website says I need CS125 and CS173 to be able to qualify for the major change. How am I supposed to be able to take those courses along with all my current classes by the end of freshmen year? (I am hoping to make the change by the end of freshman year/beginning of sophomore year)

From the UIUC Website:
"Requirements for transferring into the CS major in the College of Engineering
Before attempting to transfer, students should complete the following courses:

CS 125 and CS 173
MATH 220 or 221 and MATH 231
CHEM 102 and 103
At least one course from Physics sequence (PHYS 211, 212 and either 213 or 214)

Students should receive a grade of at least B in all required CS and Math courses and maintain at least a B average (3.0) overall. Students must also meet the requirements for the College of Engineering, listed here. If a student meets the above requirements, then he/she should visit the College of Engineering Office of Academic Programs in 206 Engineering Hall and pick up a petition to transfer."

I don’t know what your current classes are, but you will need to take Chem102/103+CS125+Math220 first semester then Chem104/105+CS173+Math231 second semester. That, by itself, is essentially a normal courseload.

I’d say take the Computer Engineering courses your first semester, see how it goes, and if you still want to change to Computer Science, register for CS 125 and 173 for your 2nd semester. You just wouldn’t take 2 of the “required” or “suggested” classes to take on the flow chart they give you (if they give you one) to stay on track for a Comp Engineering major. Then you’d apply to transfer majors, and if you’re accepted you’ll be on track. :)

The first semester, I’m taking Physics 211, Math 241, Chem 102, Chem 103, and Geog 106. I am slated to take ECE 110 second semester. Should I just drop ECE 110 and take CS 125 and CS 173 second semester?

So you’re already good on the Math front. Keep the Chem. If you can, I’d suggest dropping Geog106 and register for CS125. See how it goes from there, but then you’re first semester will be fairly rigorous.

How time consuming is CS175/how much coursework is there? Also, if I drop Geog 106, will I be falling behind on my GE’s?

dont worry about gen eds. you can do those whenever
