Changing Majors

Hey CC,

So I made it into Cal Poly SLO for Biomedical Engineering, and I’m wondering how easy it is to change majors, if it is even possible at all. I heard its a real pain to change majors at SLO, but any and all clarification in regards to this would help. Let’s say I wanted to transfer into Biology; does the difficulty of the major change depend on what major you are trying to get into?

Thanks

It does depend on if the major you want to transfer into is impacted, which I believe Biology is. There are limits on the amount of students that can be accepted into impacted majors.

Every single major at Cal Poly is impacted. Biology is a tough transfer, but a BME admit would likely get in after jumping through the right hoops and doing well at school.

@eyemgh @Yomama12 Thanks for your guys’ help; do you know what hoops I’d have to go through to get into Biology (i.e. do I need certain signatures, forms to fill out, etc.)?

Did you read the link and it’s sublinks above? It tells you everything you need to know.

@eyemgh Oh apologies, didn’t notice the first post. Thanks

Transferring out of the college of engineering is easy. Transferring in is incredibly hard

@NLinsanity Do you know how transferring from College of Engineering to the Biological Sciences Department is?

You don’t have enough data to answer that question yet. Having been admitted into BME, your MCA will likely be a good match for Biology, but you have to do well in your other classes, do the prerequisites, fill out the paperwork, etc.

It’s just a few forms and you have to maintain a 2.7 gpa I believe

What if you were to change from BME to another major in the same college such as Mechanical? Is it at all possible?

Possible? Yes. Again, maintain a decent gpa and talk to the advisor
