I applied to a university for communications, however after taking a public communication course at high school I realized I want to study business. Is it possible to change before I start my classes in the fall? Also can I do it over email because long story short my phone is out of commission

Perhaps you’ll get better answers if you give the name of your school

This entirely depends on the university. Some schools have a separate admission process where you apply specifically to the school of business (similar to engineering or architecture), whereas others it is simply part of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. I would look on their website to get an idea. I’m sure your GC would allow you to make a call from their office to enquire if you explained the situation.

Colleges vary, often greatly, on what is allowed for changing majors after you are accepted and thus it is not possible to give a definitive answer without knowing the colleges. However, for most universities, business is in a separate college from communications and that usually precludes a switch even if one were otherwise allowed within the same college. You instead have to wait to try to transfer after first semester or often not until after first year. Moreover, colleges that allow a switch usually don’t allow it to be done by email or phone. They usually have a form for a request for a change that has to be filled out and mailed in and the change is usually not guaranteed.

If the OPs university enters all first year students as undeclared who apply to CLAS then there’s no issue. Schools handle this differently. Even if a student lists an intended major on their application the school may treat all liberal arts students as undeclared until they formally declare their second year. They need to call and see if they were accepted to a specific major (communications).

The answer to this question is school-specific.
