Chapman and UCLA Acting/Theater Auditions 2017

Hello! Does anyone know how the process of scheduling auditions goes at these schools? I have their prospective dates from their websites, (although Chapman’s is very broad such as “in Jan and Feb”) but my daughter has not received any information yet about actually scheduling and picking a date. Other colleges have sent information about scheduling, and of course we’re’ trying to coordinate them all into one trip.

She had all her Chapman app in by the early action deadline and UCLA in by 10/15.

Thanks!

UCLA’s application isnt available to submit until 11/1 so I am not sure what you meant by 10/15. Also they notify those whom they want to audition so there is no scheduling until they invite you to an audition.

I received an email from Chapman that invited me to register for an audition date, based on my pre-screen. I would give them a call to check in. Good luck!

Thanks @harverster, you’re right. @cvhgfdsrty, can you tell me when you got your email? Thanks so much and good luck to you both!

I received the email on November 18th. I hope you get one! Good luck!

Has anyone heard from UCLA regarding scheduling?

Thanks @Cvhgfdsrty wow hope that doesn’t mean my daughter is out of luck.

@anitapitamom , my daughter just got her application confirmation email from UCLA today, and she applied the very first day it was open (11/1 maybe?). So based on that we may not hear about auditions for a while. Let me know if you hear!

@TS0104 @marg928 My daughter got the link from UCLA to submit her Supplemental App and schedule an audition today! So did two of her friends from school.

My D also got the link today.

@anitapitamom and @harvester - Do you mind posting what your D’s stats are? Do they clearly meet the regular enrollment requirements for UCLA? My son was planning to apply next year, but this admission procedure that appears to require university admission first has thrown us a bit.

My D got an email from UCLA with the link to the supplemental app on Accept’d yesterday afternoon and we scheduled her audition for NYC Unifieds.

Honestly, UCLA wasn’t even on our list of 45 schools when we started this process but since she was already applying to UCSD and UCI I figured why not just check the box since it was on the same application. I guess all along I figured she didn’t have much chance of getting in there anyway. We are out of state (NJ). When I read that not everyone will be required to audition I didn’t know what that really meant. I did not read it as having to pass academic muster first…but is that what it is? She was invited to audition so does that mean she passed an academic screening? As a side note she passed her Chapman pre-screen and she is auditioning at NYC Unifieds. Jersey girl feels like she belongs in Cali!

@Twoboysandadog Sure! My daughter has a 4.1 and a 28 ACT composite. 33 on English, not as strong in Math. Certainly a stretch for UCLA without the talent piece. She has a ton of activities (ASB, 14 shows, mainly leads, Conservatory Rep etc.). It’s a long shot, but you never know! Her girlfriend from her high school got in last year for Acting, but I don’t know her friend’s stats.

@marg928 @Twoboysandadog I think what they do is those that are fantastic candidates in terms of scores/grades don’t need an audition and those that are too low in terms of stats/grades aren’t auditioned and all of the kids in the “maybe” pile receive the link.

Thanks for posting those stats @anitapitamom. Were you allowed to attach anything to the initial application that indicated prior theatre experience, like a resume? I’m trying to figure out exactly what they’re basing the initial decision on.

Thanks all for responding! My DD got her UCLA audition email yesterday, as well. I’m going crazy though, because Chapman sends out audition info (if you are chosen) “by mid December” and I want to schedule these auditions in one trip…we’re coming from Ohio. They won’t give me an exact date by which decisions will go out which is frustrating. It’s mid December now. They said they are still processing and sending emails. This is not accommodating at all to out of state students especially those who are auditioning at other schools.

OK rant over, good luck to you all! I know some have heard from Chapman long ago (and UCLA, obviously), congrats!

@Twoboysandadog Unfortunately no. No creative supplement at the time of the initial application. They only ask for you to send this additional information when they send the audition link. My daughter called TFT to ask, and they said the audition decision is based on a “holistic” review by Admissions, not TFT, based on grades, test scores, and essays.

@anitapitamom wondering why you think it is borderline students. Does anyone know of students who actually were accepted into the acting program without an audition?

I just can’t figure out how it’s a “holistic” review by admissions if they don’t have that creative supplement yet. Maybe they’re just letting everyone audition who have stats within or near the range of what’s acceptable and they’re outright declining people who don’t come close. I can’t imagine that people are going to get in based on stats only and without an audition though.

@Twoboysandadog that’s what I was thinking. It makes no sense to admit someone to a theater program just because they have a high SAT score.
