@bisouu that sounds great! So glad that she’s found the best place for her…good example of really focusing on the best fit for your childs’ interest, and that might not always be the “highest” college on the list.
My D just told me a classmate of hers was accepted academically to Chapman. Does anyone know if they do academic and artistic acceptances separately?
No they don’t do them separately
@TS0104 When is your D’s UCLA audition? My D goes Jan 15 and USC the following weekend. She was also admitted to LMU and a yes from Pepperdine for Theatre, but no call back for Chapman BFA. They asked her to consider BA. Process is so mysterious! But sounds like your D has a ton of great (better?) options!
Is anyone doing UCLA, Chapman or USC in NY?
@marg928 All on campus for us. UCLA Sunday. USC the following weekend. SMU/TCU the weekend after that. We cancelled Unifieds LA so D could get a feel for each campus. SMU provides audits of theatre classes and tour of Meadows, etc. Have fun in NY. Will be a blast I’m sure!
@anitapitamom LOL not really I’m from there! Grew up in Queens and live in NJ an hour from NYC.
@marg928 at least you don’t have to travel far!
@anitapitamom @marg928: DD is auditioning Sunday at UCLA, too! Heading out there tomorrow. Anita, it’s interesting you’ve heard from Pepperdine, maybe my DD is a “no” there? We should check in…I think with that one, our video audition wasn’t opened even though we emailed it via the proper channels, so I had to follow up. My DD is applying Theater BA to USC, so no audition. I didn’t know Chapman had an acting BA…?
I won’t say that DD has a ton of great and better options, but having LMU in the bag is a good feeling. We’re visiting there tomorrow and they have been SO accomodating, the exact opposite of UCLA who isn’t doing any Theater Dept tours Friday, the entire weekend or Monday. I think UCLA is a great choice, but my DD doesn’t get good feelings there, and this isn’t helping.
@TS0104 I can’t wait to hear about UCLA and LMU especially! Chapman has a BFA in Screen Acting, BFA in Theater Performance and a BA in Theater.
@TS0104 I’m so excited you will be there tomorrow too! What time is your D auditioning at UCLA? Mine is the afternoon session at 1 pm. On LMU, LMU has a great Facebook page for the kids to start to get to know each other. Your Ds should join too! (@marg928) My D just added a bunch of information about herself. She has a girl friend from New York who is deciding between Chapman for BFA Theatre Perf and BA Theatre LMU (admitted to both) who joined LMU’s page also.
On Pepperdine, my D auditioned on campus for Preview Day and a few days later received an email that she would be admitted to the Theatre program IF admitted to the school. So we are hopeful, but it’s not in the bag. We were really impressed with the program at Pepperdine although it is small. They did an information session and a lunch. The campus is so GORGEOUS!
On Chapman, Admissions called and asked her if she would consider the BA Theatre, but after some consideration she let them know that she would pass. After researching the BA, it didn’t seem like a good fit for her. If she had gotten into BFA Screen Acting, then Chapman would have been a top contender. But not academic enough for her for other programs.
I wish you all the best! I will post audition experiences soon for those auditioning later (@marg928). Also will PM you my D’s info - maybe they will have a chance to meet at UCLA!
@marg28 @anitapitamom Hi! My D’s in the morning session at UCLA. If I have time I will let you know how it goes! Our tour at LMU was AMAZING. We had never been there. Aside from the beautiful campus and view, and location, we loved everything we saw and learned about the college and the program. D is in love which really has taken the pressure off for UCLA auditions! She loved LMU even more than Chapman, a lot more, which was previously her first choice. It seems like a great fit for her goals and personality. Thanks for the Facebook page tip…she’ll dive into that for sure.
As for Pepperdine, I guess she had decided to withdraw that application, which I don’t remember! But it doesn’t matter now, she strongly prefers LMU over everyone else at this point.
Good luck to you guys tomorrow!
@TS0104 Hope you have a wonderful audition experience in the morning! Message me if you have time!!
I peeked at the FB group myself and right off the bat I saw a kid from our area in NJ who went to the same Catholic HS my older D went to…everyone looks beautiful LOL
Hi all! Auditions went well. The beginning info session (one hour) was not as negative or discouraging as some of the other posts I have read about it. You get lots of info on fit and their type of BA program, which I appreciate. After that parents are sent away and they are split into small groups to do Audition, Movement and Interview in varying orders. Audition is alone in a room with one auditor. Movement is all together with your small group on a stage. Interview is one on one again. My D was asked to do both monologues with no redirect or adjustments (which is a bummer cause she’s great at redirect) but oh well. They caution that you can’t read anything into anything and we won’t be. We’ve learned that lesson from auditioning many times.
Tip for parents: have somewhere to go, you are prohibited from being in the audition area. I went to in a coffee shop in Kerkhoff Hall about 12 min walk away. They say it will take 1-4 hours which is quite a range but that lower numbers (you get a number when you check in, and they do NOT appear to be sequential as in first in gets #1.). My D got #10 so I stayed close, but she wasn’t done until 1215 so 3.5 hours total. We were maybe 20th in, but when we sat down ahead of us was #30 who had been there before we got in. Design majors are also in this process so the whole group is not actors FYI. By the way only maybe about 1/4 had a parent there but either way is fine. If going to the info session seems important to you or you feel like your student needs advice on fit, BA versus BFA, or making final selections, insightful info is given.
Thanks for taking the time to post about your D’s experience! My D is in now, and I will post on our impressions when she is done!
Okay so here is the summary of my daughter’s experience. Husband and daughter liked the information session. Daughter thought BA would be great for her because she is pretty academic and likes to learn about a lot of different subjects so UCLA’s program really appealed to her. She said movement was really different - not dance at all, more like rolling around on the ground and other bizarre activities. She thought that went fine. She brought a dress to change for audition/interview, but everyone stayed in their movement clothes.
Monologues - she did Shakespeare first and finished. The auditor asked her what the play was about. Daughter explained and then auditor asked her to relate to real life and perform it that way. Daughter started and I guess got nervous and completely forgot the monologue half way through!!! She said the words just completely left her mind. Daughter kind of hesitated and said sorry. The auditor asked her to go on to the second monologue. She completed the second and no further direction given. The auditor just said thank you and daughter left.
Interview went well. She had a really nice interviewer and she liked this part of the process.
All in all, she was disappointed because she really liked the school and program. Felt it could have gone better and was mad at herself.
I told her to wait and see. On to the next!
I was curious if UCLA mentioned anything in the orientation as to how they decided who got called for an audition. It seemed like it must have been based on grades and stats. Does anyone know someone who did not receive an invitation to audition?
I have a question about UCLA as well…their audition guideline stated that if you didn’t keep your monologue to the 90 second time limit they will assume you can’t follow directions! Pretty harsh! Did they really seem that stringent in the room?
