Hi guys. I have two questions about Chapman...I got in academically today and really like what I've read about the school, but haven't done in-depth research about it yet.

a) Does anyone have any experience with the department? Can you share info? :)

b) How many do they accept for their freshmen? I know it is an audition BA.

Did you audition already? Curious how they structure it...

and Congrats!!!

Nope, my audition is next month. What really confuses me: on the website, it lists me as "BA in Theatre - Admission Approved." Which reads as if I were accepted for theatre... impossible since I haven't auditioned yet!

(Side note: my nickname is Mama Bear. haha. :))

Perhaps "admission approved" correlates with the fact that you got in academically to the university today (congrats). I recommend Chapman and think it is a good option for an audition based BA that has an opportunity to audition eventually while in the program into a BFA track as an option. I have had a student who auditioned and got in there and went there. I have another who is auditioning this year. Good luck!

Thats what I think too--although over on the Chapman board they say the major listed is the one you're actually accepted for, and the theatre website says you need to audition prior to being academically accepted. Its strange!

Who knows. Thank you!

Hollylove, now that I think about it....it is a little odd because I don't recall Chapman having a separate academic acceptance.....you audition and then get accepted or not. It is not like some BFA schools that have a bifurcated process with admission to the university being separate from admission to the BFA program. Chapman is a BA and you either get in or you don't. For theater, you do need an audition. To my knowledge, my student who is a current applicant for theater hasn't heard that she was accepted "academically." By what method did you hear you got in "academically" as your original post indicated? I assumed my student would hear once she auditioned.

By the way, if you have any confusion, you can always call a school and ask this question.

I'll add that I just looked up emails from two years ago when I had a student who applied to Chapman for theater and she auditioned there in December and heard that she was accepted around Jan. 23...but it was AFTER the audition.

Theyve posted some decisions on WebAdvisor. Chapman actually does accept audition-based majors academically if they indicate a second major--I indicated "undecided," which could explain it...except that it very clearly says accepted in the same box as it says BA theatre.

i'm not going to worry about all this quuuuite yet though - I hear back from my first choice, ED2 school a week before the Chapman audition. So if I get in there, this will all be insignificant anyway. :)

I know they mailed letters Tuesday. I'm in LA so hopefully will get mine today or tomorrow. I'll let you know what it says.

could it maybe make a difference that I'm kind of, well, academically "overqualified" for chapman, and so they may like me to come with or without the theater major? I hate to sound conceited but it was a safety school for me (academically at least).

I can't be sure but maybe it is, as you indicated, an academic acceptance given you indicated a second major. It has been two years since I had a student apply there and she applied EA and so, as I said, she heard of her acceptance in mid Jan. too but she had already auditioned. The student I have this year...has not yet had her audition....and I am not aware that she has heard of an academic acceptance yet (unless she hasn't informed me of it). She happens to be from your area too.

It is not conceited at all to say that getting in academically was not difficult for you since it is an academic safety for you. Everyone needs a safety and good for you that you are admitted. I hope your ED school comes through and if not, that your audition for Chapman results in a positive outcome.

My son auditioned by videotape last year and was accepted at Chapman as an acting major. He also received an unexpected merit "award" towards his tuition. However, he chose to attend another program. I would suggest asking about how many productions they have each year and what opportunities there are to be cast in those shows. Last spring, we were given a tour by a lovely young woman, a senior in the BFA program. She had only been in one show during her years there; she said that the competition for female roles was particularly tough--not so competitive for the guys. . Of course, this can be a new year and things can be different but my son took the number of productions into account in making his decision. Best of luck to you!

Just as a follow up with what I posted before - I posted a comment on the Chappenings blog and got a nice email from an admissions officer. Although the way the website was set up confused me a little, I was accepted for undecided until I audition and see how that goes! :]

My D's status changed today to "Admission Approved" for the BA in Theatre so hopefully everyone will start to get their packets soon! (Good luck Holly!)
