Charity run/walk questions!

I'm doing a 1-mile charity run/walk in the morning, and have some questions. I just got talked into it yesterday, my friends are clueless when it comes to details, and I don't know anyone who has done one of these before.

I have two pairs of shoes that I normally wear, a pair of Nike Air Max Assail II's that I got over spring break and an older pair of Asics GT-2100s. My right foot cramps (not uncommon for me. I had a severe staph infection in it when I was younger, and it's never been "right" since then.) after walking a while in the Nike's, but my ankles and shins never hurt. My left foot hurts in the Asics after a while, and my ankles tend to ache a bit, but because the shoes are so light, I feel like I can go farther and faster. Which would be the lesser of the evils?

Also, since this is so early in the morning (Registration and warm up at 7:30, main event at 8:10), what should I eat before I go? I'm assuming nothing too heavy, but would something like toast and peanut butter be too much?

Thanks in advance! Sorry for being so clueless!

I don't know how to advise you with the shoes but remember to strech and that should help with cramping and hurting. I just seached "shin streches" and found www.racewalk.com. Go under "Cool Down" tab and itll give you streches.

Do you plan on running it? Its at most going to take you 15 minutes to jog it. It should be quick and painless.

I suggest eating very lightly a couple hours before. Bananas help cramping and remember to keep hydrated (no carbonation).

Good Luck! Have fun!

I plan on walking it, but my walk is pretty much a jog (it's a perk of having classes that are far apart and a REALLY heavy bookbag!). I haven't been stretching, so that will probably help.

Thanks!

It's only going to be a mile and you're going to be walking/jogging it, if you feel any pain just keep fighting through it. Just remember, it is only a mile.

It was actually a mile and a half due to the construction on campus. I finished in 20:57, and was the fastest person who walked the whole thing. I was a minute faster than my friends, who ran the first half of the course.
