CHEAP furniture for ND son's off-campus apartment

My son, about to enter his senior year at ND, will be living in an off-campus apartment this year, in the Grape Road vicinity. He will need a bed/mattress and dresser. Do any of you veteran ND parents or students know of a place in the Mishawaka area where he can buy this stuff REALLY CHEAP? I will be with him when he arrives on August 22, and will have a car that we can use to go places and haul stuff back to the apartment. Certainly he needs a mattress, and ideally more than that to sleep on (box spring, headboard, footboard, etc.) to make it more like 'home'. None of this needs to be fancy, just functional, as he will probably discard it all or sell it next spring when he graduates. Thanks for any information you can provide.

well this is all obviously used, but you can find some great deals on craiglist if you look under the for sale: furniture category

One place to check out is Value City. They are located on Grape Road, near the intersection with Douglas road.

Check out Goodwill (probably the Western Ave location if it's still there). In some states (that prohibit retailers from selling used mattresses), GW contracts with mattress manufacturers to sell inexpensive BUT NEW mattresses.

My son just outfitted his off-campus house room at Salvation Army.

This is a great time to get stuff from places like Salvation Army and Goodwill, because all the spring cleaners and off-campus people have shed their stuff, but the onslaught of students hasn't arrived like it will in August to snap up the good stuff.

My son took the weekend off and drove to South Bend so he could get all his stuff situated--surely not because we are dull and boring back home right? :)

Thanks, everyone. We're gonna look into all of these places, especially Salvation Army and Goodwill. Unfortunately, living in Massachusetts means we can't drive out some weekend and scoop up the good stuff before August, so we'll have to hope for the best when we do go out there in August.
