So I was caught cheating my freshman year in high school. I feel really stupid an I know I shouldn't of done that, but I did. I'm a really smart student and Im going to be a Jr this coming school year. I was just wondering how bad this will affect my chances of going to college. Here are some of my stats.
Freshman yr -4.17
Sophomore yr-4.34
Jr yr I'm expecting an 4.33-4.5
Sr will.probably be the same as Jr
I have numerous ecs and I have a sat of 1900. I was just hoping to see how I will be affected during college application time and if there is any advice...also I live in so-cal so im hoping for a uc.I know i have to live with the consequences of my decision.

I think its out of 4

Why is this an issue? Is your school going to report it? I would think if you kept your nose clean the rest of high school you should be fine. Or are you just worried about how your GPA was effected by the cheating?

Hey, im in the same predicament as you. I got caught cheating my sophomore year of HS, and due to my districts strict zero tolerance policy, i was dropped from the course with an F. That being said, hope to god your counselor doesn’t report it to colleges, and you should be just fine. But if he does, there are colleges that dont ask if you’ve been suspended for academic reasons. And even then, if you can explain what you did, im sure depending on the circumstances that some admissions officer will feel sympathy and pity for you and accept you.

If there’s any indication that the school will report the issue, or if you received any disciplinary action or punishment (such as being removed from the course), then you are probably required to report it. The Common Application asks “Have you ever been found responsible for a disciplinary violation at any educational institution you have attended from the 9th grade (or the international equivalent)
forward, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct, that resulted in a disciplinary action? These actions
could include, but are not limited
to: probation, suspension, removal, dismissal, or expulsion from your institution.”

Although this sounds overly righteous and idealistic, you have absolutely nothing to gain by not reporting it. It’s one of your most crucial opportunities to demonstrate that you are otherwise honest and responsible, willing to take consequences, etc. If you do that, it won’t prevent you from being accepted to any college. (It will also not make admissions officers ‘pity’ you and accept you, as Indiansoup speculated; being ‘pitied’ by an admission officer is probably one of the last things that you want to happen to you)

On the other hand, if you try to rationalise what you did or don’t report it, anyone, anyone at all, who tells that to the college(s) you’re applying to, can effectively destroy your admission.

tl;dr there’s a 99% chance that you’re required to report it. Do the right thing.

It is not ideal, schools do not want students who they believe will cheat. Make sure that you some address how you have matured since being caught.

Okay let’s assume that the admissions will know about your cheating thing, since this is what you wanted to know. Best case scenario, they ask you what happened. Or you can add this to your personal statement and explain what you have learned. Anyways the most important thing like AwesomeFrog said is to report the incident, it might as well be a test of integrity.

So will colleges still accept me even though I have an cheating incident…BTW I didn’t get detention or any disciplinary action…they just made my mom pick up my phone and tell her about the incident…

I promise you that you will thank yourself for being open about it in the college admissions process.

I would like to know something similar to MRUTAH. I just got a zero on the assignment (also frosh year). Do I need to report that? I’m 97% sure there is no official record of it.

be open about it seriously
it helps more than it hurts -.-

I’m not sure whether its on my transcript or not…I’m just going to be honest about…

If you didn’t get any disciplinary action, then it’s not on your record (same goes for the person who only got a zero on the assignment)! That means the school district did not think it was a big deal, you only have to report it if you were suspended or dropped from the class for it. I know it may sound like you’re lying if you don’t report it, but you’re not! The school didn’t think it was that big of an issue (unless you were suspended it’s most likely not on your transcript). There’s no reason to tell schools you’re applying to about every lapse in judgement. Ask your counselor about this to be sure.

K thanx…will do
