Cheating? what do you think?

Ok guys, the years over and i've been thinking about writing something to my principal for while. since grades are now basically closed and i can't be accused of gerrymarndering (possibly wrong context but i like the word) i figured this was as good a time as any to actually do it.

Here's the deal: I know the cheating in my school is probably no worse than anywhere else, but i have nothing to compare it to so i can't really make a statement either way. Regardless, cheating is ubiquitous in my classes from the smallest quizes to the PSAT.

While cheating to me isn't really that personally of an issue, b/c I do fine without cheating, i think that the proliferation of cheating lowers the learning environment. when people can cheat they don't feel the need to learn and consequently these classes and their teachers turn into "jokes."

I like to think about this as such: think of the best teachers you have had over the years? why did you like them so much? were they also the teachers you had the most respect for? and was there a lot of cheating in these classes? and does the existence of cheating in a class lower your respect for that respective teacher?

in my experience i have found my best teachers along with all those other qualities that are neccesary to being a good teacher are respected by their students because they create a serious learning environment, one in which cheating will not be condoned.

i know there is no way to eradicate cheating; it will always exist. i think though, that if our administration put forth the message that cheating would no longer be condoned and that teachers who allowed cheating were creating a bad learning environment were not doing their jobs, that that emotional incentive alone would create some response from the teachers. perhaps more could be done, but i think that is all i will request of my principal.

anyway, the response i have gotten from the few classmates i have shared this with are basically that i'm crazy, that there is nothing i or my principal can do and that i am just wasting my time.

i wanted to know what you guys thought, and to hear hopefully that you didn't share the same sentiments as my classmates.

thanks

To be honest, cheating really gets on my nerves a lot. I know a LOT of kids who cheat in my school. I think cheating is bad no matter what, but it is a little more understandable if you are doing it just to barely pass a class. In my school it is the students that cheat to get the highest grades which make me angry. Not only that, but it is generally the students that teachers like the most who do it. They aren't as obvious as just using a cheat sheet, or things like that, but they do it in more underhanded ways like skipping school to miss a test and then finding all the answers from friends (and when someone comes in after first period to miss a test 10 times, there is no coincidence). But a lot of teachers seem to either be stupid, or love the kids too much to do anything. These are the same kids that then run for class council and win, making it even worse. I would never tell, because it would never make a difference, and only make me look worse, and besides, that isn't my personality. I have been considering writing a short message to the principal for after I graduate just letting him know to alert teachers in the future to watch out for stuff like that. I just hope that the saying "what goes around, comes around" is actually true, because I'd hate to see these kids always get ahead.

All I have to say is it can be frustrating as hell to see a teacher praise some student for how great they are, and how they do so well, when I know what is really going on.

It is frustrating; especially with assignments, when you have no idea what who they would be asking to "help" them with their work. However, the good students are easily differentiated at my school, because no one dares to cheat on exams; exams count for 50% of marks.

As for collegesucks, cheating in high school would make a great essay topic doncha think?

I cheated on the june SAT. The girl next to me had the same booklet and sections and I copied all of her answers. I hope she was smart cause I didn't really double check em (at all - I was day dreaming). I love cheating - I'd probably have a 3.2 if I didn't cheat it up to my 3.7. We need cheating in school just to teach kids real world skills.

I started cheating when I took a CB assessment SAT and got a 1700, realized that wouldn't cut it and didn't wanna do the work.

:-</p>

Why are you guys opposed to it so much? When i'm out partying it up, you can study enough for both of us, right?

lol thats funny.. reminds me of someone i know

cheating is everywhere in north america, i remember when i was back in my country, when you cheat, you get expelled, here, my classmate was awarded the biology award, and listen to this, he was caught cheating 2wice on quizes (quizes!!!), and he failed biology in first semester, and then he took it again in the next semester and got an A, and he received the biology award because he "improved" the most lol. i was dying laughing

"I started cheating when I took a CB assessment SAT and got a 1700, realized that wouldn't cut it and didn't wanna do the work."

Hmm...that's sad. I know when I get my june results I can be proud because I busted my ass every day for at least an hour for months studying and doing practice tests. Nothing is worth cheating IMO.

well, if you cheat, at least don`t get caught doing it.

in one of my classes, a student cheated and the teacher saw it. pretty bad sight if you were there. her test made its way to the recycle bin.

people, just don`t cheat.

so true. i don't think cheating makes the cheater any proud of himself. nor does his 'accomplishment' give him that satisfaction.

if she gets 2000+ then he has bragging rights..

To the OP- if this bothers you, write the letter. You don't have to sign it. Don't use names or teachers. Just explain what you know happens, and that it bothered you. The principal will either ignore it, or have some discussions with the staff.

Do NOT accuse anyone by name or inference or expose a teacher. Just what you are aware of that you saw happening.

That way, the principal is given a heads up, you aren't ratting, and you will feel a little better.

PS For those who cheat, how sad is that. It will catch up and if you cheat in college and get caught, say goodbye. And once a cheater, no matter how much you change, it is very difficult to get anyone to ever trust you again.

Well cheating runs rampant in my school. It's funny, the amount of time people spend time on for ways to cheat, they could be studying. The biggest problem at my school is stolen tests... One time someone asked me for answers and I stupidly told them. After one suspension, people now know not to even come close to me with any of that BS. I hate people that cheat. When it boils down to it, I think I've been cheated out of so many class ranks. I also hate it how people don't feel guilty that they're going to finish ahead of me and that it could lose my chances at a school like Stanford and MIT (I go to a small school, so if I was a rank 5, I would move out of the top 5%). I just don't get it... People have to suspect things when 2-3 people in front of me have SAT scores in the 1500's (out of 2400). Cheating is stupid, and I made the mistake of promoting cheating by giving out answers once, DONT DO IT. You're only cheating yourself.

willmingtonwave: I think spartanphoenix was joking.

message removed because i'm an idiot

the only way your school will be able to curb the cheating is by expelling a student and making it known to everyone he was cheating, or even just suspected of cheating.

At least that's what teachers at my school say they should do if they really want to enforce the dress code.

lol I hope spartan was just joking...

At my school, I remember a student, say A who commonly asks to copy kids hw, but yet when he worked his ass of on some hw assignment in a different class, and another kid asked to copy it, A refused to give it. Not dramatic, but subtly ironic.

Cheating in my school usually happens in joke classes, where teachers are uninspiring and promote laziness, ie cheating, or in classes where intelligence matters more than effort, like math and chemistry.

Cheating totally happens in classes where you're supposed to memorize stuff...but don't - like languages.

"2230 Vs 235. Retake!" that was your quote spartan phoenix. How do you spell troll?
