a lot of places, people are looked down upon for being cheerleaders. given that penn is for smarties does this really happen? i want to try out but i dont know if this owuld be the case. lemme know, thanks!

You really aren't looked down upon. People just don't care.

College isn't high school. The old social hierarchy doesn't really apply anymore, as everyone finds their own group. And matures. Maturing is the important aspect of it.

Personally, I don't really care if people look down on me...why would you care?? Some people will look down on you NO MATTER WHAT you do, so don't stress about it & if you wanna do it...just do it.

& I forgot to say, if you have cheered before you probably might have realized that a) people don't really "look down on you" and b) the people who do don't know you.

Sooo I would say if you have never cheered before, you aren't going to be able to make a college team. Sorry :(

to a certain point, i dont. i do,however, know that in events like debate people are really rude because of such things and i know that while i dont care what they think it would be hard to have a lot of people with the same view. but amen to maturing.

and dont worry nickyjane, ive cheered most of my life. :)

thanks guys and sorry for the late response.

Well, I don't think being a cheerleader necessarily hurts you on the apps... although I wouldn't make it a giant thing on your app unless you're nationally recognized. Even then, you shouldn't make a huge deal out of it since academics are the most important at any ivy school.

Does this thread make anyone else want to throw up?

"Does this thread make anyone else want to throw up?"

haha, which part?

i didnt mean on apps, i meant actually being there. but thanks

throw up? its a simple question not begging for editors of essays or reassurance of stats like most others. i love you too. muah.

but honestly....do you REALLY think that Penn "looks down" on cheerleaders. granted, the stereotypes exist. but the cheerleaders at penn are no dummies. they only way they'd be looked down on is if people were doing it for a geniune reason. i dont think that the social heirarchy (sp?) exists like that @ penn, but maybe thats just me.

at a huge school like penn... honestly get involved in whatever makes u happy. one of my good friends whose a junior, is prez of freakin CHESS CLUB, and in high school he was all hardcore wrestling, and he's in a frat now so noone would really pin him for this chess virtuouso, but he obviously doesnt care what people think of his interests... like i make fun of him a lot but noone else really does...and as has been already said, college kids are a lot more mature/respectful of whatever it is ure good at.

thats really good to hear. i think i just needed some reassurance that people grow up. thanks guys.

save the beached sea elephants!

Don't really know why it would make you want to THROW UP...I guess some people really are still immature in college. :-)

if you've gotten into penn, you must, most likely, be smart. that's what matters. most smart people are decent enough to see that not all cheerleaders are dumb and ditzy like the movie stereotypes.

thanks. i agree :)

Or how about people are smart enough to realize it is okay to act dumb and not act like you know everything all the time?? I definitely act "dumb and ditzy" at times, but I don't think that means I'm not smart. People who always feel the need to prove their intelligence are like my number one pet peeve!!!!!!!!!

don't the people who are smart, know it, and show it in a pompous manner annoy you so much? i mean, yeah, i'll give them props for being smart, but arrogance kinda makes them look stupid.

OMG yeaaaaaahhhhhhh

Like in school, okay we're all in AP PHYSICS obviously we're smart...no need to constantly remind everyone that you have the periodic table memorized!!!!!!

Hahah but seriously I think if so many people stopped trying to prove their intelligence they'd have more time to acquire EVEN MORE knowledge! OR MAYBE EVEN LIGHTEN UP gasp

haha AMEN. seriously. those who feel they need to prove something dont have the confidence in their intelligence to begin with.
