Chem 107 vs. Chem 111

Is there any real difference in pace or difficulty between these courses?

I haven’t taken either so take what I say with a grain of salt but I have heard that 111 is considerably more difficult and faster paced. This would make sense, as 111 is 107+108 but in a single semester (at least as I understand it).

If you’re an engineering major, take CHEM 111. If you’re pre-med/chem major/biology major/whatever, take the CHEM 107 - 108 sequence. If you’re nursing take CHEM 101 - 102.

I do not suggest taking the CHEM 111 unless you’re engineering, there is no need to put that kind of burden on yourself. General chemistry is a LOT harder than the chemistry you remember from high school.

If i have a chem ap credit that satisfies the chem 107 and 108 requirement, does it also meet a chem 111 requirement?

Chem 111 is Chem 107/108 just in one semester - I believe. So I would think it would FadedSpirits, double check with an advisor on that one though.

If you are in Watson, a score of…

3 = CHEM 101
4 = CHEM 111
5 = CHEM 107 & CHEM 108

markopolo - Thank you for clarifying me on that one!

I’m a Biology major who made the stupid decision to take CHEM 111…ughhh, it was a very bad decision; it was my least favorite class in my whole first year.

Can you explain why BurntFlower.

Sure, glypha1104. Professor Jiye Fang and TA that I got for CHEM 111 were very difficult to understand because of their accent, and the professor was a pretty dull lecturer. Also, the pace was very fast and topics weren’t covered in-depth. On average, a lot of people were struggling with the class, and scores on quizzes/exams were rather low in general. Lab was a mixed bag; some activities were fun (especially the last one: we worked with liquid nitrogen!), but others were dreadfully boring. I would only recommend this class to those that have no other option but CHEM 111. For everyone else, just stay far away.

thanks alot
