I've been struggling over choosing between Chem 2070 (General Chem) and Chem 2150 (Honors Chem), and I just wanted to make sure - does Chem 2150 cover the same stuff as Chem 2070 (in addition to other, more advanced concepts), or does Chem 2150 gloss over some of the stuff that's taught in Chem 2070?

Also, I should mention that I don't have a very very particular interest in chemistry (I'm Undecided, possibly considering a bio major)...it's just that I've always felt the need to push myself to take advanced classes. On the other hand, I did get a 4 on the Chem AP test (if I go for Chem 2150, I would definitely do reviewing over the summer). Any thoughts on these two courses and on what decision I should make?

come on challenge yourself and take Chem 2150/2160. It will
be fun. And don’t worry about reviewing over the summer just have
fun but not too much save some for Chem 2150/2160.

needing to push yourself into advanced classes may be a thing you leave behind after high school. consider that all of your classmates at Cornell have been doing a similar thing (at least to some extent) and so it’s not like the regular classes are for slackers. if you got a 4 on AP chem (I did also, btw) then any chem class that would possibly be useful to a bio major would also be adequately challenging.

my opinion: as a premed, i understand that there is enormous pressure to obtain a high gpa. But what ever happened to learning for the sake of learning? College is all about expanding the mind.

I earned a 5 in AP chemistry and I am pretty confident about my chemistry skills. Still, I am perfectly happy accepting a slightly lower grade in 215/216 than in 207/208 if that is what happens

i asked a pre med bio major the same q, and he said that chem 2150
was too much hard work- and that it was completely unnecessary.
i’d go with 2070 unless you’re going to major in chem.

Just a quick bit of info. Around 2/3 of the class will have received a 5 on the AP Chem Exam in Chem 2150. The percentage will be even higher in Chem 216.

I guess what I’m trying to find out is, how much more advanced is Chem 2150/2160 compared to Chem 2070/2080? Because ideally, I want to build a solid basic foundation in chemistry, while also challenging myself with advanced concepts in addition to that.

I am all about loving learning while in college, but I think it’s totally possible to do that with chem 2070. I got the median grade in that class and learned a lot, and I think most people found it at least somewhat of a challenge. especially in the first semester, when you’re already adjusting to a totally new lifestyle, you don’t want to overload on academics.
my love-learning credentials: I took the two semester orgo sequence when I could have gotten away with only one semester. so there! :)

^not accusing you of apathy. All I am saying is that if she truly wants chemistry and sincerely wants to give herself a super-challenge, she should go for it. Not because it’s smart thing to do MCAT-wise or GPA-wise, but it might be good learning wise. BUT, as people are saying above, chem 207 might be more than enough anyway.

^xs0it0esx, will you be taking 2150 then?
i got a five, but i’m just taking 2070

this isn’t hs, this is cornell; i’m sure 2070 is still going to be immensely challenging.
i think people just get nervous& feel like slackers if they’re not taking the highest class possible…and i don’t necessarily mean that in a bad way.

Just to add a quick side question to all the chem questions here.

If Im in engineering and a premed (Yes I know its insane) and i got a 5 on AP chem, should I take Chem 2090 or Chem 2150 first semester before taking chem 2080 second semester.

You should take Chem 2150/2160. You can’t take Chem 2080 after you take Chem 2150 unless you get permission. Chem 2150 covers the same stuff as 2080 but at a higher level and
Chem 2160 coves the same stuff as Chem 2090/2070 but at a higher level.
