Assuming I can get a seat in each, of course. Is this manageable (along with two Focus classes) or should I drop one in favor of the language requirement?

You're a freshman, and you want to start your career off with those courses? Why the rush?

Either drop one of those courses (in my opinion, Orgo) for a language requirement or carry lubrication around campus for the first semester.

Yea, that's dumb for yuor first semester.

Honestly I think it all depends on what your academic background and plan for Duke are. While I agree that 151 is hard and 103 is hard (though I didn't have that much trouble with the latter) it might be a good idea for you. For example if you are really strong in chemistry it could be a good idea to take 151 as you are in with all freshmen and your class is curved higher. (the flipside is that all these freshmen are good enough at chemistry to be in 151 first semester)

Really the only thing that I would have to say against it is that the workload is quite a bit for those two classes and you may find that you would rather have some more free time your first semester so you can get to know your new friends. (so unless you are an engineer you may want to delay that Math103 I think, and since you mentioned the language req I am going to assume you are not an engineer)

if you're qualified for taking both courses, then you might be able to handle them...but it's no big deal if you don't wanna

It's definitely doable, but nonetheless will be unpleasant and IMHO unnecessary for freshmen year fall semester. If you don't absolutely need to do it, then I'd recommend putting orgo off to sophomore year or spring semester. That way, you can get math 103 over with before doing a whole 2 semesters of orgo (assuming you are going both semesters of orgo).

i have a similar schedule question as hieronymus since i was planning to take math 103 and chem 151 as well. but i'm having doubts now so would it make my life any easier if i switch to chem 23L?

Depends on what focus. My focus freshman year had absolutely no work until the last week or so when a few papers were due. If the FOCUS is easy enough then you wouldn't have a problem.

lisag106: I don't think your life will be greatly improved by switching to chem 23. I took chem 23 and math 103 my first semester and I had about the same amount of work in chem as my friend who was in orgo. If you are set on taking a chem then go ahead and stick with chem 151 (at least try it out). The thing is that people are just as competitive in chem 23 as those who take orgo, so you'll have to try just as hard.
