Chem 1LB notebook

Do we have to buy PKG-GENERAL CHEMISTRY LAB NOTEBOOK INSERT? From my understanding it is just a notebook with paper. According to the chem 1lb website as well it says "it can be purchased from the uci bookstore". So does that mean it isn't really required to be purchased?

Thanks in advance.

not jsut a regular notebok. it has special carbon copy paper so you can turn in the labs while still having them.
different TAs may not even really check the notebook, so, yes, technically, it isnt requried to be purchased. but it might be. just buy it. its like 10-15 only.

is it required for the first day?

You can acquire your lab notebook anywhere you like for whatever price you like, but yeah, you still need one. At first it seems a bit pricey and unnecessary, but you need to turn your data (written during lab) at the end of lab. How will you write your lab report when you get home without your data? That’s why you need a carbon copy.

For the first week most TA’s will let it slide and let you use notebook paper because everyone is still getting used to it all.

I understand. I’m just slightly concerned because I have lab early monday and i may not have the notebook by then. I was thinking just going to a store and buying carbon paper notebook. So it is just a piece of paper with yellow copy sheet attached to rip out?

The website also describe it as a “3-Ring Lab Notebook (contains dividers and duplicate pages)”. So i can just buy a 3 ring folder fill it with carbon paper along with dividers?

Are you sure you have lab on Monday? Most (if not all?) labs start on Thursday and Friday the first week. The Monday labs will be one week behind so you’ll have time to buy everything. You should double check on that

But anyway, yes I bought the loose leaf carbon paper myself last year and stuck it in a binder. You can use anything you like.

yes it starts monday the 4th. I got an email from the professor at part of it says this:

“Course Information Document. You are responsible for all of the
information within this document! Make sure you read it carefully. Note:
A specific duplicate lab notebook in a 3 ring binder has been created for GChem students - make sure you purchase that lab notebook from the bookstore.”

Sounds like i need it for the store huh?

If they changed their policies in the past year, then maybe. But otherwise, any notebook that can make a second copy will be fine. If you’re positive you have lab on the 4th I’m sure they’ll be lenient the first day
