I completely screwed up on my first prelim for Chem.
My raw score was 122/175 (69.7%).
The mean/SD hasn't been released yet, so I don't know how heavily the scores will be curved.
I'm assuming the test questions were fairly easy, assuming that you knew which equations to use (which certainly wasn't my case).
Do you think I should drop Chem?
The deadline is this Friday, and I really don't know what to do...

Why? With the curve, it should at least be a solid ‘C’.

You need to wait for the mean/standard deviation. I’ve had Econ exams where scores of 60-70% were curved to B’s and if that happens in Econ, I’m sure it happens in Chem. I don’t know when the Cornell drop deadline is this year, but if it’s cutting it close, you can talk to your professor/TA about your grade concerns.

The mean was 98/175 and the standard deviation was 21.
I didn’t expect people to do THAT badly…

Heh, I’m sure right now you have people reconsidering their majors, let alone dropping the class. Although with most people who do poorly, it’s probably because they haven’t adjusted to how to study yet in college. What you can get away with in high school and still get A’s often won’t cut it in many college classes.

I got into Cornell with W’s. FYI.
