I did well in Chem 2A with Uvarov, but 28-29% of the class didn’t pass, an extremely high percentage compared with the other Chem 2A sections. Uvarov doesn’t believe curving because she claims that implementing a curve would hurt the class. While that’s true if a straight up bell curve was implemented, I don’t think she understands that few professors actually implement a real bell curve. Even Toupadakis implemented a curve setting 33% to a C, meaning few people didn’t pass his class.
But anyways, I’m just ranting now. For 28-29% of a Chem 2A section to not pass, that’s basically like taking 4 students and telling one of them they’re not going to pass. Is this normal in a college environment? Sorry if I sound naive and immature but as my username says I’m still an amateur with regards to college.
Professors can do what ever they want in regards to class grades. Some will curve, some go by straight percentages etc… My son has had 2 professors that did not believe in curves. He has finished 5 quarters at UCD, so 2 out of 20 professors is not bad.
Just want to say, I had Uvarov for 2A last year. I can’t say it was a good experience. And yes, she definitely had an attitude when it came to assigning grades, which I haven’t seen from any other professors here. But I won’t go into detail here.
Yeah, professors do what they want with grades. Some are harsher than others, but so long as you passed you’re at least done with the class and don’t need to worry about it. It does suck when you’re trying for high grades and get a really harsh grader though (been there, done that), so sorry if that’s your situation.
Thanks PhantomVirgo.
