For Chem 20L (or any other chem lab classes, for that matter), how many lab partners do you usually have? Is it a specified partner for the whole class, or does it vary from lab to lab?

For 20L, usually one. You pick your own. (If you don’t know anyone, sit near someone who looks smart, though they might be taken. xD )

When I took it they just went down the list alphabetically and paired 1&2, 3&4, etc. together.
You’re stuck with the same partner for the rest of the quarter.

Hm… I guess it’s TA dependant.

yeah my roommate had just one partner when he took it, it was alphabetical, i had 3 different partners when i took it, the TA just assigned the groups most of the time

Mmm, okay. So it doesn’t really matter if you take it with friends or not… Bummer!

Thanks for all of your help!

^ Well, you can look at each other’s labs and ask each other questions I suppose. Like in case you forgot what was the concentration of some chemical that you guys used. (Cause lab grading/data obtained is also TA/section dependant.)

But I guess it’s not really worth going out of your way to match schedules.

I’m currently signed up to take Pang for 20L… Kojima is the other professor for that class though. Any advice? I’ve seen the reviews for Pang on Bruinwalk, and am somewhat nervous; however, there aren’t any reviews at all for Kojima, which worries me a bit more. Have any of you had either of the two?

Never heard of Kojima. Possibly a new professor? (I would check ratemyprofessors.com but they’re currently down?)

When I took Chem20L, I had Skibo. I would say, in comparison to Pang, she was probably easier and had extra credit. I know Pang has an accent. Not sure how severe though (it’s of the Chinese variety if it makes any difference). If you decide to take Pang, definitely take a look at past exams. They don’t really change much year to year. (Skibo based her exams off of Pang.) That’s all I can really say since I didn’t have Pang. Though I did email him a couple of times since he seems to be online a lot.

I’m assuming he’s a new professor – can’t find him on ratemyprofessors.com either.

It’s too bad Skibo’s not teaching this quarter, but hopefully everything will work out with Pang. Thank goodness for the test bank!

i had gould when i took that class, pang was teaching the other lecture, my class had easier midterm/final, no curve, she gave us equation sheets plus we get to take in a cheat sheet for concepts… compare to nothing at all with an harder exam from pang…

I have taken Pang before…

Compared to Skibo, Pang’s always on schedule. His lecture will have all the details for an upcoming lab, and he passes out handouts (which you need to fill in) during lecture. PROTIP: After filling out a handout, make it neat. It’ll probably get a bit messy from keeping up with lecture. That helps a lot.

Pang also gives out study guides prior to an exam. Know/memorize the study guide, and you’ll know the exam. Also, grab whatever past exams there are. The first exam is mostly computational, but if you don’t know Beer’s Law you’re deadmeat. The final has more conceptual stuff. He’s also pretty helpful and available, always answering emails and holding office hours. So, it’s perfectly fine to spam emails at him. He’ll answer all of them.

As for accent-wise, his English has a Cantonese accent. He also ends up curving his classes due to a lot of people getting slaughtered (really now, are Chinese accents really that bad? Or maybe its because I’m used to these accents?).
