I'm taking 18 units this fall, 10 of which are chem3b/l and bio1a/l. If I end up not being able to handle it, do you guys recommend dropping chem3b lab or chem3b lecture and take it in the spring? Which is harder/more time consuming? Chem3b lecture is early drop. If I stay in chem, is it possible to drop bio1al and stay in lecture (I heard the lab was harder than the lecture).

It is not possible to keep only the lecture portion of Bio 1A.

drop chem 3b/l. Not that many people like Vollhardt and I’ve heard people say bad things about him (one of the Chem 3AL GSIs for Su08 described Vollhardt as a “dirty little man”).

Also, most people, generally prefer Pedersen over Vollhardt. Pedersen is a great teacher. He teaches the class every spring. His tests are very fair.

I don’t know if there is a significant grading difference between Vollhardt and Pedersen.

FYI, if you hate NMR, Vollhardt is really bad for you. Only Vollhardt puts NMR in 3B lecture, everyone else restricts NMR to 3BL lab.

is it possible to take chem3bl without taking chem3b?

If this happens to be an issue with signing up classes using telebears, then it’s fine to take chem 3b lab without the lecture portion. However, I would strongly discourage you from separating the two classes because albeit the separation makes no difference for 3A/3AL, there will be advanced organic chemistry synthesis and reactions you will need to have learned for the 3B labs.

Is Pedersen’s 3B lecture always at 8-9:30am TTH? I hear he makes you go and never posts anything online so note taking and staying awake is crucial.

Consistenly it has been this way.
No professor can point a gun to your head and force you to attend every single lecture. Many people frown upon waking up early for a 90min lecture. I personally don’t like 8am classes. So if you can’t make it some days, just sleep in and copy the notes from a friend. Pederson is one of the rare professors who makes a course reader on past exams he’s given, so breath a sign of relief. I had it w/ Vollhardt.

Viernes is good for Chem 3B too. That is, if you’re willing to take it in the summer. xP
