I've applied to both of these schools and will most likely be attending one or the other. If I get accepted to both, I'll have a hard time choosing between the two. Sure, UNC has the best "total package" academics, but I'm not sure if that's what I'll need. I will have most of my GE classes covered from AP credit.

My numbers (blah): 2040 SAT, 650 M. 4.8 GPA. Highest math I will have taken, and that's offered at my school is AP Calc AB. I will have also taken AP Chem.

I either want to major in chemistry or chemical engineering. I know State has the better Chem. Eng. program, but I'm not sure if that's what I want. I'm female, and I've heard there are lots of engineering opportunities for women, so I've been considering that too. Right now though, I'd love to go pharmacy school. I've heard that it's tougher to get into a UNC Grad school if you attend undergrad there?

Anyway, I was hoping that some people could tell me some significant differences between the Chemistry programs at both schools. I've had a hard time googling differences, and my Chem. teacher got his Master's from State so he's no help. :)

Thanks!

That probably doesn’t help much, but it seems that chemistry at UNC is much stronger.

You will get a good education at either one. If you think that any kind of engineering interests you whether it be chemical or some other type, you would be best served to start off at NCSU. Have you visited both? Do you have a preference?

There is a HUGE difference between these two schools. Both are academically highly respected, though UNC is much higher ranking. UNC gets the creme de la creme in-state and State gets the leftovers. BUT…State has some programs that UNC does not have. State has a smaller (nearby) campus in Textile Science which also encompasses some very interesting chemistry alternatives, including some classified DOD stuff.

The two schools don’t hate each other but there is a lot of “tension” shall we say. And the student body at UNC tends to be more liberal. The overall campus culture varies a great deal. State is actually a tad bit larger.

I have a bias, but that is my personal view and yes its political and yes its also cultural. But I commend anyone who wishes to attend either institution. In short, visit the campuses and decide for yourself where you fit in the best. And check out that Textile Science campus/program at State. They have a very good orientation over there and in a slide show they show you who some of their famous graduates are. Its very impressive. Several Pentagon Generals went to State.
