Hey guys, so I know that this department enrolls up to 10% of it's incoming class with students straight out of high school. I am curious, how difficult is it to get direct admission? Like what type of stats would you need? Thanks!

“Direct Freshman Admission
The department enrolls up to 10 percent of its incoming class directly from high school, prior to completion of University-level prerequisites. Students accepted to the UW who indicate chemical engineering as their preferred major on their freshman application are automatically considered. Competitive applicants have taken or are taking calculus and at least two years laboratory science (physics, chemistry preferred) in high school. Admission is for autumn quarter only.”

I can’t speak for chemical engineering, but I am a computer science direct admit student. I’m guessing the recommended stats are similar, but you may want to check with the chem e department for more information. For CSE direct admit, they took about 40 people this past year - 20 CS and 20 CE students. I don’t know how many ChemE takes.

ACT: 33
SAT: 2230
GPA unweighted: 3.94
I’m not sure what my ranking was in high school.

I took as many math and science classes as I could in high school, and specifically centered my AP and Honors courses on math and science. In one of my essays, I wrote about my aspirations in computer science. That may have played a role in direct admit.

If you have specific questions, feel free to ask the department advisors! I had questions about CSE and contacted them, and the advisors were very helpful and generous with information!

No matter your stats, be sure to apply for chemical engineering in your application so that it’s automatically considered for direct admit! Good luck! :)
