I was wondering if anyone could explain chanes, and how the process of direct admission works. Do you have to apply for it after being accepted into UW? What do they look for in the student. I see on the website it states one year of chemistry, or a 5 on the AP test. What if you have 2 years of chemsitry does it make your chances higher? What if you get a 4 on the AP test? Any help or info helps, as the UW website doesnt really explain too much.
Thanks guys.

Direct admit in the chem dept is actually new this year. Last admissions season (Class of 2010) the major was actually an OPEN major, meaning anyone who wrote ‘chemistry’ on their application was automatically accepted. Now it’s competitive.

I’m sure 2 years of chemistry will be in your favor. I don’t think UW takes AP into account… but for departmental admission, I may be wrong there. I’m sure they also look for a good trend of GPA/Test scores, and perhaps take a look at what other courses you may be taking, and how you fare in those.

I don’t know how many freshman direct admits they will be taking per year. It really differs per department. I wouldn’t use the biochem direct admit statistics to hypothesize on chemistry, because I’m pretty sure biochem is a lot smaller of a major even if it’s in the same department.

For direct admit in any department, I’m going to have to say there are two main factors:
-Your application (as a whole) and if the advisors found it fitting for the major and if you have ‘great potential’
-Other applicants. You can have amazing stats, but perhaps 20 (or some number) other applicants have that too… plus a bit more. Then you wouldn’t get into the major…yet.

Hope this helps!

I believe on their website it says you have to get a 5 on the AP test

This is what it says “a 5 on the ap test, OR one year of highschool chemistry” then it says that, doing that does not guarentee admission into it. That’s what I was asking. But it looks like what they take into account is just your application as a whole, just like a whole new admission process. Do they just decide from looking at your app for UW or must you apply separately?
Thanks.
