Chemistry 207/208 Placement Exams

Anyone know the topics covered by these exams? How were the exams last year? Any clues, hints, ect.?

GRYSKO on class of 2009 suggested looking at the syllabi for the courses they would test your out of.

Where is the syllabus available?

wait, I'm pre-enrolled in chem 207...does that mean i have to take an exam? And if so, what for exactly?

Yeah, I want to know too (I'm in A&S).

Just so that you know I'd study very hard to pass those exams. Typically about 30 people will try to take these exams and about 2 will pass. Most people incorrectly assume that it covers the same material as the AP Chemistry exam. The reason you have to get a 5 on AP Chemistry is because it doesn't cover the same material they want you to know. You need a very strong conceptual knowledge of what is going on. You will not be asked to do many calculations.

capedcrusader, are these tests used to test into Chem 215/216 or what?

I don't remember what the specific requirements are but you do not have to take any placement exams to get into 207/208 or 215/216 as long as your AP scores are satisfactory.

These placement exams are for people to get credit for Chem 207/208. Chem 215/216 are a honor version of thoses courses. If you are unable to pass the exam but came close be it the Cornell placement exam or the AP exam I'd consider taking the honor series. Technically you can enroll for Chem 215/216 without having any chemistry experience. Once you select a given class you'll be given several weeks to decide if you want to switch to the other course.

I dunno about sylabi but you can find course descriptions in the course catalog: http://cuinfo.cornell.edu/Academic/Courses/

Are you sure, capedcrusader, that I don't need to have taken ap chemistry to take chem 215? I took a class that was ap level in high school, but they didn't call it ap (they called it advanced chem) and we didnt take the test. But from looking at the ap chem test, we covered just about everything in there.

What materials do you use to study for the tests? Are old placement/final exams available?

Are AP questions a good source?

Is there any organic chemistry in Chemistry 207?
