Hi,

Do you guys know how the program at UCSD is for a chemistry major? Is it hard? How good is it?

I'm deciding between taking chemistry at UCD or UCSD.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

UCSD is ranked #18 for grad chemistry while UCD is ranked #33. There are no rankings for undergrad programs, so you can interpret that as you wish.

Academically, UCSD is better than UCD in almost every area.

i graduated in 2006 with my chem BS, and in 2007 with my chem MS. it's an excellent department and well-organized for the students. the professors are generally pretty good too (depending on what your are of specialty is, biochem is especially strong) and the students within the major are really close-knit. i was able to guarantee myself a good lab partner for all of the lab classes, which helps a lot :)

your first 1 1/2 years won't really feel like a chem major, since those classes are also prereqs for the bio students. but starting mid-sophomore year, you'll be in chemistry-exclusive classes and those are all really good.
