Chemistry Olympiad 2013!

It looks like I actually did well on FR … and apparently I misread a question but wrote the correct answer.

@Sophia7X, I believe the answer to 6d i. was 4, because they made sure to highlight that two were similar in energy and two were much farther apart. I thought this question asked something else and I put 4 as a mistake haha.

Okay is 52 on MC and 83-86% on the FR camp this year?

who knows, even if we thought it was harder, it doesn’t mean there will be lower cutoffs…

i got 57/60 and 80-85% FR…but im ruling myself out of gettin top 20, if it does happen it’ll be a pleasant surprise but nope

What % on the FR is:

3c: I found the concentration, not the fraction

5d, got the reactants right and the products incorrect

didn’t get any of 7b

on 6, i misread it and i drew lewis structures and talked about formal charge, instead of actually positioning stuff differently, and then i didn’t get any of 6c

Would it be around…

 • 0% to 1%
 • 1% to 2%
 • 4%
 • probably 6% or 7%

So that amounts to minus 11% - 14% so 86-89 on FRQ.
And I think I got a 52 on the MC, and alright on the lab.
Is this camp, I really hope so.

@Harvey, I studied for about 3 months and I found it really hard, and I know you’ve mentioned you studied very hard. Wouldn’t that mean that most people found it harder, depressing the cutoffs for camp?

there’s no point in estimating really, we have no idea how hard or easy the graders will be or the cutoffs…, best just to hope and wait and see…lol

CMON ACS… How long after the test were campers called last year?

and in response to that, i know we’ve studied but there’s probably people who have studied as hard or more than us, (not to mention the 15 who received camp training). also, that we found it hard doesn’t have to mean anything. for example, people on say aops will say cutoffs for usamo/camp are low cuz of difficulty but then cutoffs are still highhh…ugh so hard to make camps

@ Harvey

I don’t think any of the icho people are returning. The person who got a gold medal can’t return due to USNCO rules, someone else who made icho last year from my section decided not to take the national exam because he is doing USABO (shame I know), and Ive heard the other two are not returning.

Also, people only occasionally return to camp if you look at list of past camp finalists.

but how many 12th graders made it having not made camp last year…do you think they account for that, like USAMO where you cant get in if you werent already in junior year…o god

You can still make USAMO senior year if you don’t make it junior year.

It looks to me that many significantly underestimate the amount of effort needed to make the camp. One year of extremely hard work and total dedication to chemistry is probably not enough even for a very bright student.

Yes, it definitely takes a lot of time and effort to make camp. But, there has been a student who has made it after less than a year to make it from my school. There has also been a student who has made high honors after starting studying in winter break. All that matters is the way you study and if you are efficient or not. Saying that people need over than a year to make it is definitely an over-generalization.

presumably that one student already had a decent grasp of AP Chemistry before studying for the olympiad. there is always a genius who does not have to study much. an interesting question is how many students actually believe they are that genius.

@ChemistryTutor, That is so true! Too many people think that they are smart enough to do Chem Olympiad without truly studying!

I believe that most of the people who make camp are people who are slightly genius, work their butts off, and have a true, passionate affinity for Chemistry!

@ChemistryTutor
we’re not here to receive a lecture.

has anyone figured out that NMR question yet?

okay i got 44 right if 12 isn’t D and 45 if it is according to the sheet posted here I should be fine with earning honors right? also what nmr question?

Well, I started studying a few months after the school year started. I’m currently taking AP Chem. Basically went like “oh I’m actually doing pretty well in AP Chem, might as well start looking at USNCO.”

edit: oh and did I mention I’m realllly nervous Q.Q

Join the club! I’m really borderline; 52-54 MC, 86-89FR, but a hard year, so…camp? Top 50? Top 30 (***…)? Who knows! I WANT IT TO BE THE FIRST WEEK OF MAY ALREADY.

@thenerdyjew, that’s super duper borderline! Best of luck to you!

I’m at 51 MC, and around 75~80 for FR,
Lab 1: I got around 0.70 for Al and 0.50 for Cu
Lab 2: I got the lab order right, but not the element.

Do I have good chances?
