Does anybody know what score is needed on the local exam to advance?

Top 2 in your school to take the National Exam (assuming no one at your school has attended the summer camp at Air Force).

alright thanks

wait, so of all the people that take the local exam, they dont cut you by the top x % at the local exam sitting but rather by the top 2 in your school?

Let me rephrase: Being top 2 in your school is necessary and in most cases sufficient for taking the national exam. There may be a few cases when more schools participate in the local competition than expected and as a result there are fewer national exams than there are students to take them. This has never happened in my (highly competitive) district.

I thought you had to get 50 points to advance. I got top in my school last year and didn'tgo to state.

i was second best in my school with around a 45 i think, and i didnt go to the next round. i think u need to score 50, but only a max of 2 ppl per school can go to the next round.

There are minimum scores that vary by region. There is also a cap of 2 students per school, so even if more than 2 exceed the regional minimum, only 2 go on.

I'm in OC, and my teacher said only top 10 in Orange County advance...
I wish I had time to study, but AIME and USABO semifinals are far more important to me...

I advanced last year with a score in the high 40s.
I think they took the top 8 from my region or something.

Fizix, was last year's exam out of 60 or 70?

its always out of 60

I don't know what the score is, but I'm doing it :)

I missed by one point, and I was the only person from my school to take it. sigh

I am so going to take self-studying more seriously after that incident...

I personally know someone who went to International Chemistry Olympiad. He's well-rounded, has over 6000 posts at HeavenGames.com, and wasted hours and hours of time on World of Warcraft and Age of Empires II (and on ECs like swimming). And...he took calculus in 12th grade [so they aren't all math geniuses =P].

You only need algebra 1-2 to do Chem.

It's just to dispel the myth that people who get into the Intl. Chem Olym are anti-social and study all the time, a myth that may apply more for those in the IMO (more so than average - a study was done on IMO participants in Britain - and found that they scored SIGNIFICANTLY higher than average on an Asperger's Syndrome test).

=> I have Asperger's as well and scored almost perfect on that test, so this is not a bad thing. :p But my social life is completely constrained to online forums.

How's everyone preparing for the National Exam?

Is it too late to take the qualifying test? I spoke with my AP Chem teacher yesterday about taking it, but I didn't have any time to discuss dates. The online tests I took were pretty easy.
