Background info: incoming freshman, AP chem score of 4 junior year. Pre-Med track.

So here it is, I want to get a good foundation in chemistry before I take organic chem next summer.
For Fall 2011, my 2 focus classes are Honors Calc 3 and w.e. chem course i choose, then in Spring 2012 I'll be taking physics and biology.
Anyways, I don't know whether to take chm2045/L for fall and take CHM 2051/CHM 2046L(And I hear the prof for CHM 2051 is very good) in Spring OR just take CHM 2047/L(Angerhofer as the instructor) for Fall.

As far as workload, class quality, easiness of getting an A, what would be the best option?

Note: I chose not to do only chm2046/L for Fall since I wanted to get an overall reviewing of chemistry.

How many credits do you receive for CHM 2047 and lab? I am not pre-med, I want to apply to PA school, which is fairly similar, but I’ve learned a lot about this while doing research when comparing the benefits of both, and to my understanding, med schools want to see 8 credits for general chemistry and also, 2 grades. For example, just taking 2046 in the fall would not be acceptable because you really need both general chem credits, even though you may have received the score on the AP exam to only have to take 2046 and not 2045.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, because I’m certainly not an expert on this topic, but as far as I know, I’m pretty sure you’ll need 8 credits of general chemistry, and a grade for both of them to be considered for most American med schools…

I don’t think you should start in 2045… Especially since you only have a 4 on the AP chem… I know ppl with 5’s who can’t keep up. Don’t get to far ahead of yourself… UF is NOT AP.

^^^
Although, if he’s already in honors, had a great foundation for Chem, and knows he’s “good” at it, then starting at 1025 wouldn’t be necessary. D had honors chem in H.S., and AP Chem (4 on exam). She began with Chem II (2046 and 2046/L) and had no difficulty. She’s been thru both Orgos now and PChem, and is heading into analytical chem. But you have to know you

Is she pre-med though? Because that’s really where the issue lies. Med school admissions committees want to see grades for both general chemistry classes - that’s what I really meant, when I said 2 grades. When I said 8 credits, I meant 4 credits of 2045, and 4 credits of 2046. It should be taken at an actual college - whether it is community college, or a 4 year school. If you want to be considered at all for most American med schools, you really need actual grades for both of those courses on your transcript. A lot of them do not accept AP credit. Also, it is a good idea to take both because you’ll need a good foundation for the MCAT…

D was considering pre-med at one point, and a pre-health advisor at UF told her this. If you are to use AP credit for Biology, Math, or Chem, for example, and you are to have, as an example, 8 hours of Chemistry. You can use AP credit for any of that 8 hours, just make sure that you taken an additional 8 hrs of at least 3000 level Chemistry to show that you can do it. Or, in her case, as she was using her AP biology credit, just make sure she was to take additonal biology classes at the 3000+ level to show that you can take a college Biology course. In math, many schools only have 1 semester of calculus required; others have two semesters of Calc. If you AP out of two classes, then take Calc 3 and an additional math, i.e. diffyQ. They just don’t want you to only use AP credit and not be able to show you can do a college course in college. Granted, most people will probably re-take some classes for foundational purposes, but for some, especially those shooting for the accelerated med program, then they might want to be able to take some more upper level classes sooner, i.e. biochemstry, etc, for MCAT prep. The OP’s best best is to talk to a pre-health advisor and confirm this information for their specific case.

There is a chart on this page going thru the AP info for UF med school and how they would suggest you do it. Again, with the consult of a pre-health advisor for a specific case by case scenario.

I think I’m going to start on CHM2045/L just to get a good foundation and so that I can take Honors Chem2 in spring.
I also got a 5 on AP Biology, but idk if to take both credits for BSG2010/L and BSG2011/L and then take 8+ credits of 3000+ level biology courses(although idk where to find these courses) or just take BSG2010/L and BSG2011/L?
I got a 5 in AP calc AB and BC so for Fall I’m taking Honors Calc 3

Not the case… As zebes pointed out, they want to see credit for chem, but not necessarily gen chem. One would easily be able to take higher level chem/bio/physics courses in lieu of gen chem/bio/physics.

That’s really close to what I’m doing. I’m on the premed track and am also taking Honors Calc 3/ Chem in the fall. I passed both AP Chem and IB Chem, but decided to forgo accepted the credit and take the easier A in Gen Chem.

Hmm, okay, I stand corrected. I do agree that they should see a pre-health advisor to get the best advice possible for their situation, just to make sure they cover all bases and have every class taken care of.
