How difficult is the chemistry placement exam? I was only able to take IB Chemistry SL at school, which Brown wont’ be giving any credit for. I really want to skip Chem 100 and start at Chem 330, but I’m slightly concerned about doing well on the placement exam. Should I spend the summer studying intensively, or is the exam more of a “you either know it or you don’t” thing?

It’s relatively easy. With any basic knowledge of high school chemistry, you’ll be placed into Chem 330. Definitely with an IB class. The people who end up in Chem 100 generally didn’t take chem in high school, or didn’t remember it if they took it.

Thanks! I don’t really get it, though. Brown lets Chem HL place you out of Chem 330, so wouldn’t it make sense for them to allow Chem SL to place you out of Chem 100? It’d certainly save people like me a lot of trouble.
