Chemistry placement exams

The freshman handbook states that the chem department requires ALL freshman who want to take chemistry in the first year to take the placement exam. So if I want to get my credits from AP and go straight to chem 33 my freshman year, do i still have to take the chem placement exam? (i no the thing says all, but i just want to make sure)

^i thought you could skip if you had AP credit. eh, take it anyway to make sure. it's pretty easy. and i think like 30 min or something, i don't remember how long.

im pretty sure it says that you DONT have to take the examination if you meet the AP credit... i can't find the exact words where i know that but..

here's what the FAQ of the chem dept says

Where do people with a 4 or 5 on the AP chem exam belong?
Students who earned a 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry exam may place out of general chemistry and begin with Chem 33 in the winter if desired. Students who choose to take Chem 31X or Chem 31A/B will forfeit their AP credit in chemistry. However, premedical students should be forewarned that not all medical schools accept AP credit, and thus a student may need to take either a general chemistry course or a more advanced chemistry course in order to qualify for some medical schools. It is therefore recommended that pre-med students with a 4 or 5 on the AP Chemistry exam and who do not anticipate taking more advanced chemistry courses consider enrolling in Chem 31X rather than enrolling directly in Chem 33.

edit: i found it. go to the approaching stanford website and click on Placement tests. it says...

Chemistry
The Chemistry Placement Test will be held on Wednesday, September 20 during New Student Orientation. You should plan on taking the placement test if you are considering taking Chemistry31X AND you did NOT score a 4 or 5 on the chemistry AP exam. You can find more information about the chemistry course offerings for academic year 2006-06 at http://www.stanford.edu/dept/chemistry/classes/index.html . Exact times, locations, and additional pertinent information will be posted after September 1.

thank you!

does anyone know how the test is? ._. I've been trying to study a little out of the AP study book and by watching MIT OCW video lectures, but I'd love to know more specifics I need to study cuz I really have to pass...

It's not that hard; I didn't take AP chem and got "strongly recommended" for 31X.

yeah, basically if you've had a high school chem course and understood any of it, you'll get recommended for 31x

yay! we didn't have AP chem at my school, but I loved chem just from out plain honors class and I studied a bunch for the SATII. I'll just brush up then. thanks!

If you want to go ahead and take Chem 31X or even Chem 33 and you don't get recommended for it I think you can take it anyway. You may struggle and/or do poorly, but I don't think Axess checks if you meet the prereqs for any classes. For basically any other class you can take whatever you want (with the obvious exception of intro seminars where you have to apply for the class or some activity classes where you have to sign up on a first come first serve basis). It seems highly unlikely that intro chem would be different. (This is also true of language classes. If you want to take a higher level you can take a higher level. You can't decide that you met the full language requirement, however, unless you pass the test and qualified with a high enough score on a previous exam such as a 5 on AP French Language.)
