Chemistry Placement Test

So after signing up for orientation I found out about the chemistry placement test and have a few questions.

  1. What is on the test? I got a 5 on AP chem last year but have forgotten a lot of the AP material but remember the general topics and ideas. How much should I review if I know the basics?
  2. Will a bad score negate my 5? If I don’t do well will it negate my 5 and make me retake gen chem?

Btw I’m an engineering major.

  1. It’s mainly big picture things you learned in chemistry. If you got a 5 on the AP exam, you should do well enough to place out of Chem 130 (Gen Chem I). Just go over the main topics very briefly.

  2. No, it won’t affect your AP Credit. All the placement exams (outside of the language placement exams) are “advised” placements, which mean they can be adjusted if you don’t feel like you belong in the class you placed in. Even if you do poorly on the placement exam, just the fact you got a 5 on the AP Exam would be enough for an advisor to be okay with you taking Chem 210 (Organic Chemistry I, which is the next class in the chemistry sequence)

The only exception to this would be if you were in LSA and got a 3 on the exam, in which case you would need to do well on the placement exam, but people who get 4’s and 5’s are okay either way.

dont review at all I can almost guarantee you will almost 100 it with a 5 on AP. Easiest test you will see for the rest of your life haha and it also mean literally nothing… you can always override the placement no matter your score

just try on language and you are good.

yes even as an engineer. You get credits for language and its really easy to get 8 credits

Is the test linked to us, or is it a generic test?

@honcho I think it is generic

Where did you find the placement test? I’m in engineering too, but it doesn’t say I have to take it anywhere.

You take it during orientation.
