My daughter will be taking Honors Chemistry this year. Her school does not offer a second year of chemistry, and the chemistry teacher told the class that Honors Chemistry is not a SAT Subject test prep course. My daughter is very interested in applying to a college program that requires Chemistry and Math 2c scores before they will even send you an application to the program. So she needs to take the test and do well on it.

The College Board site says that for the Chemistry SAT Subject test you need one year of chemistry. But is that adequate preparation. It seems from the discussions that most people take it after taking AP chemistry.

Do you think that she would be able to do well if she did self-study with prep books and practice tests. Should she have a tutor? Should she take a second year of chemistry somehow online during her non-existant spare time? Does anyone know a good online AP chemistry course?

While taking AP Chem would make the SAT Chem test much easier, it's not necessary.

It is definitely possible to do well on the SAT chem with honors chemistry as long as you use prep books and practice tests. I took the SAT Chem after honors chemistry, used some prep books, and got a 760. I would probably have done even better had I studied a little more.

The SAT Subject Test in Chemistry is designed to assess chemistry knowledge at the non-honors high school level. An Honors Chemistry course with some review should be fine.

Most people on CC take AP Chemistry before taking the test, but most people who take the test don't take AP Chemistry first.

Perspective on this board is very narrow. For example, there isn't a score "much better" than 760. 800 is a "little better" statistically, and on a given test date may not even represent a "perfect" score, only a "maximum" score.

If your daughter earns A's and/or B's in honors chem, she'll do fine with a few hours in a review book before the test. Tutors, on-line courses, second courses, are all not needed. Be careful not to become a helicopter parent on this.

I waited to take it until after AP, but I really didn't need to. It did make the test very easy, but I felt like I could've performed about the same after finishing only Honors Chem. Many of my friends who didn't take AP Chem, just Honors, got scores >750 on their SAT IIs.
