As a rising junior, I will be taking Honors Chemistry. My 1st choice college requires at least 2 SAT IIs, and I can't take the subject test with AP Chem because I will be taking that senior year. Would Honors Chem be an adequate prep? Or should I do some outside prep, such as the Princeton review, Barrons, and sparknotes? Our Chem teacher this year is tough but good, and I've always been a science-inclined student receiving straight As in all my past science classes. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I took AP before taking the subject test, and you do not need to know everything you learn in AP to do well on the subject test (in my opinion, the AP exam was a lot harder than the subject test). However, you might have to know a little more than you learn in an honors class, so you should do outside prep. Even after taking AP, you’d still want to prep, since the subject test and the AP exam vary a bit in format. I think you’ll just mostly need to learn the concepts you do in honors a little more in-depth, and then perhaps a few other small topics that honors didn’t cover. I recommend getting some good review books to look at, but overall I think you should be able to do good on the subject test.

@imaginethis Thank you. Do you have any recommendations for prep books?

I only used Princeton Review, although it doesn’t go too much in-depth. It worked well for me, but, then again, I had AP. It’s good as a general recap. Maybe also consider getting Barron’s, since I’ve heard a lot of good things about it from others, and it seems to be a little more thorough (in fact, some say it’s a little more difficult than the actual thing). Also, there’s The Official Study Guide for All SAT Subject Tests. Although it may not have as much content for Chemistry as books just for Chemistry might, it will give you the most accurate practice tests because it’s made by collegeboard, the makers of the test itself. Plus, if you’re thinking about taking any other subject tests, you’ll have that book to use for those, too.
