I have the opportunity to take a chemistry course over the summer to fulfill my high school Chemistry requirement. I'm very nervous about taking chemistry next year because it is supposedly an extremely difficult course, taking it over the summer would allow me to focus all my time on the one subject. I'm also interested in taking it over the summer because it would allow me to take physics next year and take an AP science course before applying to college. Is a summer course a good idea? Will taking a summer course and getting a year ahead really affect college admissions? Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

I took chemistry the summer before sophomore year so I could fit in all the science APs (except for Physics).

I wouldn’t say it affects college admissions that much, but it’ll provide you with a more rigorous schedule than you would have otherwise.

Don’t expect to remember any of it if you choose to take Chem AP though.

Well if you’re required to take chem, then it’ll be a good way for you to take more courses in the future. I know some kids in my school who took chem in the summer before soph year, and then skipped to AP Chem in soph. year. So they were pretty much a year ahead of everyone. And now they can take more courses.

1st question: how long is the course?

2nd question: are you willing to put in time and effort to learn the material? if you take time
out to learn it well, AP chem will be a breeze. In fact, you should probably sign up for AP chem sophomore year if you work hard enough.

The chem course I’m expecting to take is 6 weeks, which leaves exactly 4 weeks for travel/summer activities:(.
I was planning on taking physics next year if I got completed chem successfully over the summer, but now it seems AP chem would be a better alternative if I did well.
Thanks for the answers:)

That’s what I did. It wasn’t very difficult at all.

oooh i did this as well. wasn’t hard at all, however the AP chem test killed me and AP chem in general (i took as a junior) was FAR more difficult for me then it was for others. I pulled off a 97 for the summer honors chem class (it was one semester counted twice) and then an 84 first semester in AP and then a 92 second semester in AP. So it’s easy (the summer one) but you don’t learn as much as you would if you took it during the year

edit: oh but at my school you have to take honors chem before AP chem anywayyyy soo yeah if you’re super smart just go straight to AP! I personally couldn’t handle that though…

i love chem. i don’t think it’s hard at all. i dont think taking it over the summer will negatively affect your chances but i’d rather not be in school during the summer lol
