I'm an admit to UCLA class of 2015, and I'm interested in joining the sorority. However, I have a couple of questions.

Are there any requirements to be part of the sorority?

How do I join?

What are the benefits?

What are the cons?

Is it time and money consuming?

Please help! Thank you.

Well I’m not entirely sure how UCLA works (might be better on the UCLA board) but generally you have to rush ALL the sororities in a formal process called rush. Check UCLA’s Greek website for dates and possibly to sign up. It’s a multi-day event and you have to go to EVERY house (if you skip any you may be dropped) and you narrow them down over the days. You rule out certain houses but houses can also cut you - it’s a mutual selection process. Thus Chi Alpha Delta may decide you aren’t a fit and cut you. Or you may not like it as much as you think, that’s why it’s best to keep an open mind during rush - you could find that another house is best for you.

Pros include sisterhood, which is a super close thing, basically instant friends, it looks good on a resume especially if you hold an office, somewhere to live which can be cheaper than other options, networking, parties, meeting frat guys, etc.

Cons are money, sometimes a superficial atmosphere, and it can be very time-consuming, especially when pledging. There can also be hazing (Google it if you don’t know what it is) which can suck. I was hazed but very minimally and it wasn’t a big deal, but sometimes houses can get pretty nasty.

Yes it is time and money consuming.

Since Chi Alpha Delta is an Asian interest sorority and not a member of the National Panhellenic Conference, the rush process will most likely differ from the “typical” sororities that girls join.

My friend is in an Asian interest sorority at UPenn and she said that the pledging process was time consuming and grueling, but she really likes her sorority and the girls she’s met.

In most NPC sororities you have no pledge process. Its basically a joke, where the “sisters” spoil their little “babies”. And us fraternity guys pair with them and throw parties for the new babies. Then they get initiated. The recruitment process is what weeds the girls out.

For an Asian sorority, I have no idea, although I hear they actually have pledging process

the only requirements to being in the sorority is that you are a ucla student, and are continuing at ucla for at least two consecutive years (pledge year, and one year after).

you join by attending rush events during zero week. events are typically on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, with all rides and food provided. does not cost a penny! (in comparison to NPC sororities)

benefits include sisterhood, test files, community awareness and service, networking with alumni & other frats/sororities from social, scholarships, life lasting relationships, and fewer dues, and less dues than NPC, etc.

cons: pledge period might be busier than normal, but as a first year, you will want to have these experiences to create relationships from all around social, two quarter pledge period.

time/money consuming? yes, it is, but it is worth it in the end. however, it will not be consuming to the point as you will not be able to complete schoolwork. their view is that SCHOOL COMES FIRST.

Does anyone else find the somewhat-irony in above posters mentioning test files next to community awareness and service?
