Hi! I am a longtime lurker/first time poster on this site. It has been EXTREMELY helpful as my daughter has been selecting schools and preparing to audition. I have a problem that is prob not unique to me and culd use some hlep form all you parents who have survived this process.

My daughter has been churning out applications and getting auditions scheduled as quickly as she can with our budget we gave her and with all of her free time (limited becuase she attends an IB School). She has scheduled MOST of her Unified auditions and just has a few left to schedule. Two of them that sent her emails to schedule are now filled up for Chicago Unified slots--Carnegie Mellon and BoCo. Does anyone know what to do in this situation? She sent emails to the departments asking what to do, but I wasn't sure if this was the best plan of attack. I didn't know if either accepted walk ins in the event of already applying to the school.

Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated!
Thanks!

Same boat. Completely heartbroken that basically all of my schools’ slots are filled up.

Sorry, this isn’t really a helpful post with advice, just sharing a similar story. I emailed my schools too; no responses yet. I asked them if I could get on a waitlist, but it probably doesn’t matter because I’m going to tell my parents to cancel the trip.

Good luck to your daughter.

So sorry to hear they are filled up! It must be so disappointing - and it isn’t even what I would consider last-minute.

Sometimes it is better to call rather than email. It may not change the results, but at least you may have an answer sooner.

Good luck!

Just a thought…Chicago often fills up faster than NY or the other cities. Maybe change your trip to another Unified city? Also, I agree with shaun0203: CALL! I have found all the schools to be incredibly helpful on the phone. You may want to ask if you can submit a DVD audition in lieu of an in person audition. I know it’s not the same, and it’s certainly not ideal, but they do allow it for students who live in abroad or in Alaska or Hawaii, and some schools allow it for students who live 500 miles away from a school. Good luck!

I had the same problem with Syracuse but I kept checking their website to sign up and finally the other day a slot opened. They will allow you to submit a DVD in lieu of an audition since all slots are full.

Thanks for the advice all!

I called BoCo and they told me to keep checking in daily to see if slots open up. If not, they said to try checking in at Unifieds and explain the situation.

I sent an email to CM and the theatre department said an admissions person should be in touch shortly!

Hopefully all will be resolved. The sad thing is, she still has two schools on her list to submit apps for that she intended to audition for at Unifieds. The suckiest part is that she did the apps slower because she knew we were on a budget and the apps were so expensive. Feeling like it’s my fault and trying to remedy it.

Thanks for the kind words and help.

Also, BoCo said that they would accept a videotaped audition IF we try all of that and it doesn’t work --thought that might help some of you.

Makes me sad to think of people who can’t even get audition times.

I assume that when you are talking about audition slots with Boco that you applied by the posted date. If you did not apply in time you are probably shut out. If you applied by the deadline I’m sure they will try to fit you in.

beenthereMTdad, most of the schools have been very blunt about the need to apply early to get a slot, even if you are still within the application deadline. For example, UMich posted something on their website saying if you wait until Thanksgiving to submit your prescreen, you may find it difficult to get the audition slot you want/need. They only have a limited number of slots at each location, and it is first come first serve. I know people last year who applied on time but could not get an audition slot.

Probably not helpful, but Jan. 17, BoCo has an audition day in
Pittsburgh. CMU has auditions on campus that following weekend.

The reason I am asking if you applied on time or not is because when I helped out with the NY unifieds from 2008 - 2011, we always were able to accommodate the student who applied by the deadline.

Yes, we did apply on time–a touch early, even.

That’s good news, and honestly the way they made it sound to me. I have to think they are going to try and accomodate the people who applied on time. I cna’t imagine they WANT to watch DVD auditions. LOL.

walk ins are accepted at some schools and it’s always worth a try. It obviously won’t work at schools that pre-screen. I would keep checking and calling as kids back out, get accepted places or just can’t show up. It’s hard to explain or understand Unifieds. It’s almost like you need to do it twice to understand how it works but I wouldn’t wish twice on the same student twice.

Funny you should mention that, fourkidsmom. We live in suburban Chicago and I am so curious and uncertain about how Unifieds actually work that I thought about going down to the Palmer House and being a fly on the wall to prepare us for next year. D, of course, thinks that’s a crazy idea…

To add to this conversation. The reason BOCO and a couple of the programs do not allow walk ups is because they have a difficult time as it is trying to see the people who applied.

So if a student applies on time, do the colleges guarantee an audition somewhere/sometime?

Guarantee? Probably a 99% guarantee. I do know they will do everything within reason to accommodate everyone. The problem lies with the rented space. You only have the space for a specific period of time.
