Can anyone fill me in on time allotments to plan for at Chicago Unifieds? As we start requesting times, it is beyond me how to go about deciding which ones to place where! Specifically we need to know about the following schools: Webster. Boco, Roosevelt CCPA (on campus), UArts, Michigan (hopefully invited), Otterbein, and Hartt. I know some are 30 minutes, some 1/2 day and some 2 different time periods . . .

Just so you know, Michigan’s MT Program is not part of the actual Unifieds. It is their Acting program that participates in that event. However, they do audition in Chicago over those dates (maybe you meant that all along).

Christie: Otterbein’s auditions at Unifieds in NY, Chicago and LA are 15 minute private auditions.

Does Otterbein also do a dance call at Unifieds, specifically NY Unifieds?

I did Chicago Unifieds in 2009, and the majority of them were quick auditions. I only auditioned at Unifieds for three of the school you are interested in, but I’ll chime in with the info I do have. BOCO was a 15ish minute time slot for monologues/songs and then a 2 hour (I believe) dance call later that day. CCPA auditions are held on their campus (4 blocks away) is a 15-20 minute slot for monologues and songs, and there are dance calls on the Sunday before Unifieds officially start. If you have any other questions about Chicago Unifieds, please let me know!

Thank you all and Doctor John for your help. I ended up calling all the schools, and they were most gracious in their assistance. Seems I was the first to call any of them this year about that specific question! I think we have a possible schedule to enable us to fill out requests. The first of 14 applications went out today! (Man, I wish we had an in-house essay coach!)

Please forgive the delay in replying.

Yes, we do a dance audition at Unifieds. But it’s not a dance call in the classic sense, i.e. 25 dancers learning a routine and then performing it at the end of an hour. We do that on campus, but not many of us have the space or time to do that at Unifieds.

Instead, we ask students to do a few ballet moves, and/or a jazz combination, and/or some tap steps, depending on their training. We want to get a feel for their ability to move and take direction, and be playful, as well as their technique.

Stella Kane, our director of dance, attends the auditions in Chicago. I have senior MT/Dance majors with me in New York, and alumni in Los Angeles. But we put all the auditions on tape, and Stella and I review them in March, after we’ve seen all the applicants.

Hope this helps. Don’t hesitate to write back with questions.
